𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋 𝐈𝐒 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐑: How to prep your pet to be alone and avoid separation anxiety
The return to school is fast approaching. Heading back to class also means a major shift in routine for your pets. After a wonderful summer surrounded by the whole family, transitioning back to being home alone can be tough on them.
Here are our tips for a smooth and gentle transition:
• 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄: Gradually start moving meal times and walks back to what they will be this fall.
• 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Keep their minds busy while you are gone. Leave stimulating toys right before you step out, such as a stuffed Kong or a licking mat. This will occupy them during the first few minutes of solitude—which are often the most critical—and help them associate your departure with a great reward!
• 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲: A tired pet is a calm pet. Plan a good physical workout and mental stimulation session (scent games, obedience practice) in the morning before you leave, and another fun activity session when you return in the evening.
• 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: Picking up your keys or putting on your shoes often triggers panic in our furry friends. To desensitize your pet, practice these actions throughout the day without actually leaving. When it is time to leave for real, stay completely calm and neutral as you walk out the door.
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬
Every pet reacts differently. If your companion vocalizes a lot in your absence (whining, crying, barking, or meowing continuously), destroys objects near doors, or soils the house only when you are away, they may be experiencing separation anxiety.
There are excellent solutions available to help them feel better, such as medical solutions, calming supplements, or behavior therapies.
