A great in depth explanation as to why massages are sooo important, and the consistency of them! One every 6 months to a year will not give you full results or benefits… some short term ones sure, but not the full benefits.

The Science Behind How Massage Supports Exercise Recovery

Exercise places mechanical, metabolic, and physiological demands on muscle, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and the nervous system. Recovery is the process of restoring normal tissue function, replenishing cellular resources, and repairing microscopic damage. Massage supports several of these processes simultaneously.

Improved Circulation and Tissue Perfusion

During exercise, muscles consume large amounts of oxygen and nutrients while producing metabolic byproducts. Blood flow increases to meet these demands, but once exercise ends, circulation gradually returns toward resting levels.

Massage mechanically compresses and releases soft tissues, creating a pumping effect that helps move blood through muscles and surrounding tissues. This can:

* Improve local tissue perfusion
* Increase oxygen delivery
* Enhance delivery of glucose, fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and hormones required for repair

This is why a bit fitting is crucial. We want our horses comfortable with what’s in their mouth, BUT it’s so much more than that too. Worth the read 😊

With show season in full swing… let’s talk about the real challenge: remembering where we’re supposed to go. 😂
How do you memorize your tests or courses?

Dressage riders: I have to draw my test out… over, and over, and over again. Then I put it away and recite it from memory… over, and over, and over again. 😆 I love having a caller as my “emotional support human.” I rarely need them, but knowing they’re there just in case my brain decides to leave the arena is comforting. 🙈

Hunter/Jumper riders: You don’t even get your courses in advance! How do you memorize multiple different courses in such a short amount of time without accidentally inventing your own? 😂

Eventers: Seriously… how?! A dressage test (ok that you get in advance), then a cross-country course the size of a small town, and then a stadium course? I think I’d end up at Fence 12 wondering why everyone else is headed to Fence 8. 🤣

What are your best tips and tricks for memorizing tests and courses? Let’s help each other out—someone might have a game-changing idea that the rest of us have never thought of.

Now that the heat wave has finally passed after what felt like a week of living on the sun ☀️, we’re all recovering from feeling like overcooked roasts… and so are our horses!

Many horses have had a week (or more) off, so ease them back into work over a few days instead of jumping straight into a hard ride. Give their bodies time to readjust.

A few great options:
�• Short stretchy ride (walk/trot/canter or just walk/trot)�• Easy walk ride with a few ground poles�• 20–30 minute hack�• A combination of a stretchy ride and a relaxed walk hack
One of my favourite summer enrichment ideas is horse popsicles! 🧊🐴 They’re easy to make and perfect for hot days.

I used:
�• A reusable container or Solo cups�• 1 chopped apple, 1 large carrot, and some pineapple�• A mix of Pedialyte or electrolyte powder, a splash of Gatorade (different colours for different flavour), then topped up with water

Freeze and let your horse enjoy! 😁

Sometimes in training one needs to step outside our comfort zone. Today was that day for me 🙈 I’ve decided to add some jumping to our training schedule for a couple reasons….
I’m big on cross training to help our horses. In this case, I’m hoping it helps with Darcy’s confidence, mostly with his canter, and for myself, I’m hoping it teaches me to allow Darcy to make his own mistakes and not feel like I have to “help” him all the time.
It may not look pretty yet, but it’ll get better with time… let’s hope 😆

💥 And bonus, I walked away with clean underwear after my lesson 🤣 💥
