Something I’ve been hearing more and more lately is riders being told that their horse is simply “incapable” of doing something.

A healthy, sound, 10 year old horse “can’t” learn flying changes.

A horse that rushes will “always rush.”

A horse that stops at jumps is “just a stopper.”

A horse that bucks, bolts, gets strong, falls in, swaps leads, misses distances, or struggles with balance is simply “that kind of horse.”

A horse that won’t stand still is “just impatient.”

A horse that is difficult to catch is “just cheeky.”

A horse that spooks at everything is “just spooky.”

A horse that won’t load is “never going to load.”

A horse that struggles to hack alone is “just not brave enough.”

A horse that leans on the contact, won’t go forward, or ignores the leg is “just lazy.”

I really struggle with that mindset.

Of course, there are genuine physical limitations, pain issues, conformational limitations, and horses that are simply better suited to certain jobs than others. Those things absolutely need to be respected.

But once those things have been ruled out, we need to stop confusing a current training problem with a permanent limitation.

A horse not knowing how to do something today does not mean they are incapable of learning it.

A behaviour that has been happening for two years does not automatically mean it will take another two years to fix.

And a horse repeatedly giving the same answer is often doing so because nobody has successfully taught them a different one yet.

Training should be about figuring out why the problem is happening, breaking it down, and giving the horse a clear and understandable path to the correct response.

Horses are incredibly trainable animals.

Sometimes I think we underestimate them far more than we should.

So before projecting a limitation onto your horse, ask yourself whether they truly cannot do it, or whether they simply haven’t been taught how yet in a way they understand.

Appellant
2015 dark bay Thoroughbred gelding | 17hh
📍 Fruitvale, British Columbia
3️⃣5️⃣,🥕🥕🥕

Appellant retired from racing in 2023 and has developed into an exceptionally talented sport horse. This horse is QUALITY—he moves like a warmblood, has tremendous scope and could make an outstanding upper-level event horse or jumper.

Currently showing at 0.90m and ready to move up, schooling Training Level cross-country and jumping up to 1.10m consistently at home with tons of scope for more. Appellant is brave, honest and will jump anything you point him toward. He has also attended dressage shows and loves travelling and showing.

Appellant requires a confident rider who can continue developing his talent. He has come an incredibly long way over the past three years and is ready for someone with ambitious goals.

Currently wears four shoes and is maintained on a primarily forage-based diet.

His training and show career will continue until sold. Price will increase with further education.

Another great week at Thunderbird Show Park! 🐴✨

While we arrived with fewer horses than we had originally planned due to a number of circumstances, we couldn’t be prouder of the ponies that made the trip.

The baby pony was incredibly brave, confidently jumping around the ring for his rider, and Homie came out feeling so much more confident than before. It’s so rewarding to watch these young horses grow, gain experience, and become more confident with every outing.

A huge thank you to CWD - British Columbia for your continued support and for keeping our horses comfortable with exceptional saddles and service. We truly appreciate being part of the CWD family.

We’re already looking forward to the next one! 💙
