🚨 Pet Toxicity Awareness 🚨

Meet Tony 🐶 — a sweet pup who got into something dangerous to dogs: grapes. His owners acted FAST and brought him straight to the emergency room so we could safely induce vomiting and start treatment right away.

🍇 Why grapes are scary: Even small amounts can cause acute kidney failure in dogs, and there’s no safe dose.

⚠️ Common signs of grape toxicity:
• Vomiting (often within hours)
• Diarrhea
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Abdominal pain
• Increased or decreased thirst/urination

🐾 The takeaway: If your pet eats something toxic, time matters. The sooner they’re seen, the more options we have to prevent serious complications.

Tony was lucky his family didn’t wait.

When in doubt, always call your vet or head to the ER immediately.

🏖️ Sand Impaction Awareness – Zelda’s Story 🐾

• Meet Zelda, an adventurous pup who had ingested a large amount of sand without her owner knowing and ended up getting a sand impaction

⚠️ What is sand impaction?
• Sand can accumulate in a dog’s gastrointestinal tract
• It can cause a partial or complete blockage
• This is a medical emergency if left untreated

🚨 Signs Zelda showed
• Lethargy and discomfort
• Decreased appetite
• Abdominal pain
• Difficulty defecating / little to no stool
• Vomiting (can occur in many cases)

🏥 Veterinary care
• Exam confirmed concern for sand impaction
• Supportive care on IV fluids were initiated to help move sand safely through the GI tract
• Close monitoring for dehydration, worsening pain, or obstruction

💛 Outcome
• With prompt treatment, monitoring during her 31 hour hospital stay, Zelda’s repeat X-rays showed the improvement, she recovered and was able to go home
• Early intervention made all the difference

🐶 How to reduce the risk at the beach
• Discourage dogs from digging or chewing sandy toys
• Rinse balls and toys frequently
• Offer lots of fresh water
• Take breaks from play
• Watch for licking or eating sand

📢 Take‑home message
• Fun at the beach can come with hidden risks
• If your dog shows signs of illness after beach play, seek veterinary care right away

🕷️ Tick Season Is Here! 🐾

Tick season is officially upon us, and these ticks were all removed from one puppy that came in to see us yesterday!

Ticks can transmit serious diseases and are often hard to spot—especially on young or fluffy pets. Ticks can be anywhere on the body; they like to attach between their toes, on the bottom of their paw pads, in elbow creases, on the face and ears.

Prevention is far easier (and safer) than treatment.

✅ Talk to your regular veterinarian about parasite prevention options that are best for your pet.
✅ Check your pets daily after outdoor time.
✅ Use a tick twister to safetly remove ticks.
✅ Don’t wait until you see a tick to start prevention.
✅ If your dog does have a tick attached, it is recommended to test them for tick borne illnesses 6 weeks after a tick bite.

🐾 Chocolate Toxicity Awareness – Qantaqa “Tack’s” Story 🐾

• Meet Qantaqa (“Tack”), a sweet pup with a not-so-sweet emergency. While her owners were out, Tack ate ½ a tray of brownies made with ¼ cup of cocoa

🍫 Why chocolate is dangerous to dogs:
• Chocolate contains theobromine (and caffeine) — toxic to dogs
• Dogs cannot metabolize theobromine efficiently, so it builds up in their system
• The darker the chocolate, the higher the risk (cocoa powder & baking chocolate are especially dangerous)
•Smaller dogs = higher risk even with smaller amounts

🚨 When the owners got home • Noticed the missing brownies and immediately brought Tack in.

She was:
•Bloated and uncomfortable
•Panting and agitated
•Tremoring
•Bloodshot eyes
• Having diarrhea

🏥 On presentation
• Tachycardia – HR 210
• Hyperthermia
• Agitation and tremors
• All classic signs of chocolate toxicity

🩺 Treatment & monitoring
• Placed on ECG to assess cardiac rhythm
• Blood pressure monitoring for hypertension

♥️Hospitalized for:
•IV fluids for hydration and toxin excretion
•Supportive care
•Thermoregulation
• Activated charcoal to bind remaining toxin
• Anti‑diarrheal and anti‑nausea medications
• Close monitoring of vitals, cardiovascular and neurological status

💛 Outcome:
• After 24 hours, Tack’s symptoms significantly improved
• She was stable and able to go home
• She showed us how she can ‘sit pretty’ for us prior to being discharged 😍

📢 Take‑home message:
• Chocolate ingestion is a true emergency
• The type of chocolate, amount, and your dog’s size all matter
•If you suspect chocolate exposure — don’t wait, seek veterinary care immediately

🐶 Hazel, the German Shorthair Pointer puppy was the serotonin boost we all needed. ✨

Not every ER visit is heartbreaking—sometimes they come in with a minor concern that we can treat, and a healthy pup with a wagging tail heads home! ☺️

We are here for any and all concerns regarding you pets health. It is best to try to get booked in with your regular vet as they have your pets full medical history.
