Endless thanks to our RVTs who are so instrumental in the care of our patients and clients !

When a patient arrives critically ill or injured, RVTs are right in the middle of the action.

They may be triaging patients, placing IV catheters, collecting blood samples, starting fluid therapy, administering medications, providing oxygen support, monitoring vital signs or assisting with CPR.

Emergency medicine requires more than technical skills. It requires knowing what matters most, recognizing deterioration quickly and staying focused when the situation changes by the second.

This RVT Month, we’re shining a light on the advanced training, medical knowledge and skills behind the title Registered Veterinary Technologist.

Retained Deciduous Teeth: A Common Concern in Young Canines.
We recently had a sweet Yorkie named Olieco come in who had retained deciduous canines that needed to be removed.
Baby teeth that don’t fall out on their own can cause crowding, discomfort, and dental problems as adult teeth come in.
In her case, we opted to remove them during her spay, allowing her to have both procedures done under the same anesthetic.
If your puppy is between 4-7months old, have their teeth checked regularly to make sure those baby teeth are making way for their adult ones!

Livestock Emergency Response Training

Members of our team recently participated in a Livestock Emergency Response Course to strengthen our knowledge and skills when responding to emergency incidents involving livestock.

Training included risk identification and mitigation, animal behaviour and safe handling, livestock transportation, and rescue techniques for motor vehicle incidents and entrapments, as well as barn fires.

The course provided valuable knowledge for working safely around large animals, including cattle, horses, sheep, goats, swine, and poultry.

Pictured are Hailey (RVT), Dr Jones, Dr Sydney Spitzer and Kayla (RVT) with the North Peace Cattlemen’s Association's Livestock Emergency Response Trailer. The trailer is equipped with the tools and equipment required to assist with livestock emergencies thanks to the support of many.

Morgan came in for his wellness exam and vaccines, where we also discovered an ear infection. He’s now receiving treatment, along with a plan to help maintain his ear health and reduce risk of future infections.
When he’s not busy being a good patient, Morgan loves swimming, dock-diving, and carrying around his emotional support glove.
We’ll be helping Morgan keep those ears happy and healthy so he can get back to doing what he loves!

Summer's gone and so are our wonderful WCVM final year Primary Care rotation students!
We are reminiscing and extremely grateful for the time Kasey spent with us. She was always keen to offer her many talents and thoughtful insights. Kasey definitely made the most of the variety of cases that came her way. We think we showed her that rural mixed practice can be as exciting and fulfilling as a city emergency practice (minus the traffic)! We're deeply thankful for all she contributed to our patients and team. We can't wait to hear about where your journey takes you, Kasey! 💫. You are already an awesome member of the veterinary profession!

Happy birthday Anita ! 🌻🎂 We wish you a great day celebrating with family on this beautiful September day. Many thanks for all your RVT talents for the last 17 years! Whether you are answering a multitude of questions, filling prescriptions, troubleshooting medical equipment, assisting with pets, horse and cattle exams, or running diagnostics, you are a wonderful example of the indispensable things vet techs do in mixed animal practice. Here's to another awesome year and making a meaningful impact, and maybe, just maybe, finding a bit more time to spend creating at your sewing machine!

What a character! Pasha came to visit Dr de Souza for his 12 week booster vaccines. Look at those extra toes ! Pasha has polydactyly - an inherited condition of cats we see regularly. Those extra toes are unique and rarely cause issues, although it is important to keep their nails trimmed to ensure they don’t grow into any of the soft tissues of the paw. Fun “fact” or wives’ tale - some say these cats were selected long ago because of the belief they could catch more rats on ships. Doubtful but who knows lol!
