I believe peptides may eventually become incredibly useful tools in veterinary medicine.

People are already experimenting with them in their petsโ€”and yes, some are reporting impressive results. But we must also recognize that unsuccessful outcomes and adverse effects may be less visible online.

Peptides can influence signalling pathways involved in inflammation, tissue repair, blood-vessel formation, immune activity, metabolism and more. That potential is precisely why theyโ€™re so fascinatingโ€”but also why they shouldnโ€™t be treated like harmless supplements.

A great deal of peptide research begins in animals, but โ€œstudied in animalsโ€ does ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ mean proven safe for dogs and cats. Much of that research involves rodents or other laboratory models. Species differences can affect receptors, metabolism, dosing, drug clearance and unintended physiological consequences.

There is also an important ethical distinction: our pets cannot understand the uncertainty or consent to being used as experimental subjects.

That doesnโ€™t mean I am completely against peptide use in animals. In the right hands, for an appropriate caseโ€”particularly when conventional options have been exhaustedโ€”I believe peptides may have tremendous potential.

But right now, I think they are best approached with veterinary oversight and guidance from someone who genuinely understands:

๐Ÿ”ฌ The specific peptide and its mechanisms

๐Ÿ• Canine or feline physiology

โš ๏ธ Contraindications and possible interactions

๐Ÿงช Product quality, sterility and sourcing

Itโ€™s me acknowledging that the science is fascinating and the potential may be enormous, while also recognizing that powerful biological tools require knowledge, restraint and respect for the animal receiving them.

Treble decided to roll in some very freshโ€”and possibly bearโ€”p**p during our walk this morning.

So, there I was at 5:30 a.m., washing p**p out of one very thick Canadian Eskimo Dog coat. Living the dream ๐Ÿ˜‚

For routine baths, I generally prefer โ€œcleanerโ€ pet shampoos with gentler surfactants, fewer fragrances and fewer potentially irritating ingredients. Kin+Kind is one brand I like.

However, I also keep a generic dog shampoo containing some less-than-ideal ingredientsโ€”and this morning, that was the bottle I reached for.

Why? Because it suds up beautifully, spreads through thick fur and makes it much easier to see where Iโ€™ve scrubbed when Iโ€™m trying to remove actual p**p before sunrise. Sometimes you need the stuff that works really well ๐Ÿ˜‚

Many gentler shampoos donโ€™t produce as much foam because they avoid certain stronger, high-foaming surfactants. That doesnโ€™t necessarily mean they arenโ€™t cleaningโ€”the amount of lather isnโ€™t a perfect measure of cleaning powerโ€”but lots of suds can certainly make a messy job easier.

For a healthy pet receiving an occasional bath, Iโ€™m not overly worried about using a conventional shampoo once in a while. For regular bathing, I would generally choose something gentle, properly diluted and specifically made for that species.

Dogs, cats and other pets can have very different sensitivities, so please donโ€™t assume that every โ€œnaturalโ€ or dog-safe product is also appropriate for cats. If your pet has chronic itching, infections, allergies or another skin condition, they may need a veterinary medicated shampoo or a more individualized bathing plan.

Reducing unnecessary exposure matters to meโ€”but so does being realistic. Not every product has to be perfect, and sometimes the 5:30 a.m. p**p shampoo is exactly the right shampoo ๐Ÿ˜‚

Foxtails are starting to dry out and spread their seeds, so keep an eye out while walking your dogsโ€”especially through long grass!

These sharp little seeds can become lodged between toes, under the skin, in ears, eyes and even noses. Rhythm had to have a bunch removed when she was first adopted, and Lyric once got one stuck up her nose while sniffing through grass on a walk!

Give your dog a quick check after walks, paying extra attention to their paws, ears and coat. Sudden sneezing, head shaking, licking at one paw or swelling could mean a foxtail is hiding somewhere ๐ŸŒพ

Chicken feet. Chicken necks. Duck feet. Turkey necks. Eggs with the shell.

All perfectly reasonable foods to feed a dog in the right context.

But thereโ€™s something I see fairly often with raw-fed dogs:

We start with a diet that already contains plenty of boneโ€ฆ and then start adding more bone-containing foods on top of it.

๐Ÿฆด A chicken foot here

๐Ÿฆด A duck neck there

๐Ÿฅš An egg with the shell

๐Ÿฆด A turkey neck as a recreational chew

๐Ÿฆด Maybe a little extra bone because โ€œcalcium is good for them!โ€

Individually, none of these foods are necessarily a problem.

Collectively? That calcium can add up surprisingly quickly.

And remember: raw meaty bones arenโ€™t just meat with a crunchy handle ๐Ÿ˜‚ The bone portion is a concentrated source of calcium and phosphorus!

If your dogโ€™s base raw diet is already formulated with an appropriate amount of boneโ€”or uses another calcium sourceโ€”additional bony foods arenโ€™t automatically nutritionally neutral.

๐Ÿฅš Even eggshell counts!

Eggshell is extremely calcium-rich. If youโ€™re feeding a properly balanced commercial raw food that already contains ground bone, there usually isnโ€™t a nutritional reason to routinely add the shell simply because youโ€™re feeding an egg.

This doesnโ€™t mean your dog can never have a chicken foot or a neck.

It means we need to look at the whole diet rather than judging each ingredient individually.

Too much bone/calcium can contribute to things like:

๐Ÿ’ฉ Very firm, dry, chalky or crumbly stools

๐Ÿ’ฉ Straining or constipation

โš–๏ธ An unnecessarily high calcium intake

๐Ÿงฌ Mineral balance issues when the overall diet isnโ€™t properly formulated

And calcium deserves extra attention in growing puppies, because skeletal development depends on appropriate mineral intakeโ€”not simply more calcium.

This is one of my favourite nutrition concepts:

๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฎ ๐—ด๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ปโ€™๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜†๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ!

Chicken feet can be nutritious.

Eggs are nutritious.

Raw meaty bones can absolutely have a place in a dogโ€™s diet.

But nutrition happens at the level of the whole bowlโ€”and ultimately the whole diet ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ•

Before adding another โ€œhealthyโ€ topper, ask:

What is this food actually contributingโ€ฆ and is the diet already supplying plenty of it?

Rhythm has been barking quite a bit todayโ€”and apparently she was also at it in the middle of the night last night. Iโ€™m currently doing overnight pet-sitting stays, so Chantel was home with herโ€ฆand she was ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ impressed ๐Ÿ˜‚

We believe there may be a coyote hanging around the area, I seen one this morning in the green space. Rhythm likely heard or smelled it during the night and has remained in full neighbourhood-security mode ever since.

Since she seemed stuck in that hyper-alert state, I gave her a small amount of ๐—”๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜€๐—ธ๐˜‚๐—น๐—น๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ and ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ปโ€”not to heavily sedate her, but simply to take the edge off and help her nervous system settle.

๐ŸŒฟ ๐—ฆ๐—ธ๐˜‚๐—น๐—น๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ

American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is traditionally used as a calming nervine. It may be helpful when an animal seems tense, reactive, overstimulated or unable to switch offโ€”even after the immediate threat has passed.

Think: โ€œI know something is out there, and I must remain on duty indefinitelyโ€

๐ŸŒฟ ๐—ฉ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is generally considered more settling and rest-promoting. Compounds such as valerenic acid appear to influence GABA-A signalling, helping the brain make better use of its own inhibitoryโ€”or calmingโ€”signals.

Think: โ€œThe coyote may exist, but perhaps I donโ€™t need to check the perimeter every twelve secondsโ€

Both herbs have a fairly strong taste and smell, so I mixed them into a little yogurt with some treats to make the situation more acceptable to management ๐Ÿ˜‚

Theyโ€™re available in several forms, including alcohol-free glycerites, capsules and powders. You can also find dog-specific calming products that already contain valerian, skullcap or a combination of the two.

These herbs donโ€™t necessarily knock a dog out. Ideally, they simply reduce nervous-system arousal enough for the dog to settle and rest. Responses can vary, though, and occasionally an animal may become more excited instead of calmer.

As always, check the exact herb species and product ingredients, and speak with your veterinarian before combining calming herbs with medications, seizure treatments, sedatives or anesthesia.

Hopefully Rhythm can now officially clock out from coyote patrolโ€”and Chantel can get some sleep tonight ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿบ

Today Iโ€™m making some frozen treats for my dogs using strawberries, blueberries and Saskatoon berries, with a little acerola cherry powder mixed in ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ’

My acerola happens to come in capsules, so Iโ€™m simply opening them up and adding the powder to the blender before freezing everything into little treats.

Unlike humans, dogs and cats can synthesize their own vitamin C, so healthy animals generally donโ€™t have a dietary requirement for it.

But with two senior dogs, I still like incorporating vitamin-C-rich whole foods into their diets where I canโ€”not because they canโ€™t make it, but as another way to increase the variety of antioxidants and phytonutrients coming from their food ๐Ÿงฌ

Acerola is naturally very rich in vitamin C, while the berries bring their own mix of anthocyanins, polyphenols, fibre and other plant compounds.

Nothing complicated. Just a fun frozen treat with a little extra nutritional nerdiness ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿซ
