I hadn’t ridden Vicky in over a month so I thought I’d better get on her. This is what I love about horses with a good mind that have been well trained. They remember and you can pick up right where you left off!

31 kms of trail, 800 m of elevation gain, a few dozen creek crossings, snow! Let’s just say Vicky did a lot of learning today! Kept up to all the bigger boys no problem!!

The Criollo horse is known for stamina on the trail! After our first three trail rides I’m very impressed with the pace Vicky sets. She has a quick step that eats miles!!

The Criollo horse is known for it's incredible endurance. One of the breeds most famous endurance demonstrations was by Aime Felix Tschiffely, who rode two Criollo horses, Mancha and Gato, from Buenos Aires to Washington DC. From 1925 to 1928, they travelled 21000 kms, and crossed through 20 different countries.

Vicky’s first ride out in the hills! She displayed an amazing temperament dealing with all the new things: other horses, varied terrain, and wildlife. I was very impressed with her stamina and how sure footed she was! Looking forward to many more rides!!

Perfect time of year to expose Vicky to the sights and sounds of the outdoors! It’s amazing how sweaty a young horse will get from a slow ride when they have to process so many new things!

Origins of the Criollo horse (part 1):
1535: The foundation stock, roughly 100 purebred Spanish Andalusian horses, arrived at Rio de la Plata with Pedro de Mendoza
Feral Survival: When settlers abandoned Buenos Aires in the 1540s due to native resistance, they left behind horses that thrived in the pampas, reproducing by the thousands
Natural Selection: These abandoned horses evolved over 400 years to survive extreme temperatures, drought, and lack of resources, developing extraordinary hardiness
