⚠️ RABIES ALERT – NELSON AREA ⚠️

Selkirk Veterinary Hospital has reported a confirmed positive rabies case in a skunk

While rabies is rare in our region, this is an important reminder that the virus is still present in wildlife in British Columbia.

Please use caution around skunks, bats, raccoons, and other wildlife, particularly animals behaving unusually. Avoid handling wildlife and keep your pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date.

ALERT! POSITIVE TEST RESULT FOR RABIES in a skunk!

While rare in our area, rabies is a fatal virus with devastating consequences. Protecting your pets with vaccination and using precautions with wild animals are both ways to help reduce your risk.

The virus spreads when the saliva of an infected animal gets into the body. This usually happens through a bite, but it can also pass through scratches or if saliva gets into an open wound or the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Annual wellness exam day for Rose! 🌹

Dr. Carrie is giving Rose her annual exam and getting her vaccines up to date.

Even indoor cats can still be exposed to infectious diseases. Viruses and other pathogens can be brought into the home on shoes, clothing and objects, while accidental escapes, contact with other animals, travel or boarding can create additional opportunities for exposure.

Annual exams also give us the opportunity to monitor weight, dental health, heart and lungs, mobility and other changes that may not be obvious at home.
