What is EOTRH in horses ??
🐴🐴🐴🐴

EOTRH (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis) is a painful, progressive dental disease that mainly affects the incisors and canine teeth of older horses.

The exact cause still isn’t fully known. It appears to be several things potentially contributing.

* Chronic inflammation/periodontal disease around the tooth roots is strongly associated with EOTRH.

* Abnormal immune and inflammatory responses may cause cells called odontoclasts to begin resorbing (breaking down) the tooth

* The body may respond by laying down excessive cementum around the roots, this is the hypercementosis part of EOTRH.

* Age is a major risk factor; it is seen most often in horses over about 15 years old.

* Mechanical stress on the incisors and changes in the periodontal ligament with aging may contribute.

* Researchers have also investigated bacteria and changes in the oral microbiome, but no single bacterium has been proven to be the cause.

One important point, especially from an equine-dentistry perspective👇

EOTRH isn’t simply caused by failing to float a horse’s teeth. A horse can have excellent routine dental care and still develop it.

The changes also often begin below the gumline, so the visible crown can look fairly normal while significant disease is occurring around the roots.

Studies have found EOTRH changes in roughly 50% or more of horses over 15 years old in some populations, although not every horse has obvious symptoms. The likelihood generally increases with age.

🐴 Did you know your horse can have dental problems without showing obvious signs?

Horses are incredibly good at adapting. They may continue eating, working and performing even when something isn’t quite right in their mouth.

Some signs worth paying attention to can include:

- Dropping feed or quidding
- Difficulty chewing
- Head tossing or resistance with the bit
- Weight loss or poor condition
- Bad breath
- Packing feed in the cheeks
- Changes in behaviour or performance

Routine dental examinations aren’t just about “floating teeth.” They’re about evaluating the whole mouth and identifying problems before they become bigger ones.

Good dentistry starts with education, proper examination and putting the welfare of the horse first.

This is my 5 year old mare Billie.
She gets routine dentals every 6 months but was a bit behind… This was 9 months between dentals. You can see in the before her jaw was slightly restricted on lateral movement and her molars were not in 100 percent occlusion. The after shows no restrictions and her molars are now in 100 percent occlusion.
This shows you that the little things matter when it comes to your horse and their mouth. It’s why I believe every horse every year. It really just helps maintain the life of your horse and the comfortability they have in everyday living and even more so when they are performing.
