Why we’re fundraising for the through the June Dog Walking Challenge 🐶💛
In 2020, cancer took the life of my beautiful mother, Carol Gust.
The aggressive form she had left us with little-to-no treatment options. Her diagnoses and treatment all occurred during the pandemic, further burdening us with travel and visiting restrictions on top of the endless questions we all asked in hopes of finding something that could save her. The few options she had ranged from blanket cancer treatments that were “covered” or inexpensive (but not very effective) to clinical trials costing $60,000 on top of travel expenses.
Most real treatments were only available out of the country. Mom didn’t qualify for the treatments that may have helped her… and we had to stand by and watch as she lost hope and ultimately, her life.
My family’s story is not unique. But I hope one day soon that it is.
We would love to see the cost and availability gaps closed, to see Canadians get access to effective treatments sooner and closer to home, and to see our loved ones get the treatment they need to live full lives.
We saw first hand just how hard this battle is to take on alone. That’s why we support the Canadian Cancer Society’s vision to continue to increase cancer survival rates and ensure faster access to effective, affordable cancer care detection and treatment.
My mom was a big animal fan and would have loved to show her support this way. So this is in her honour, as well as the friends and family that have also fought this battle.
