This ration excels at 2 things: it’s adorable, but it’s also sortable!

Canine ingredients aside, look at the chop length of that forage- cows do a spectacular job of picking out the yummy bits first and then eating the forage later. The problem with that is, when every bite isn’t the exact same, we aren’t optimizing for rumen health. Even worse, a cow can sort aggressively, and leave the rest for more timid cows.

Sometimes we call this the trail mix problem: ever share some trail mix with someone who only picks out the m&ms?

There are plenty of strategies to reduce sorting but forage length was where we decided to start on this herd!

Is keeping warm stealing from your calf’s immune system?

It’s important to reflect on every visit as a vet and as a future vet! Focusing on what went well helps build confidence and identity areas of strength. Actively thinking about how to improve next time gives us constructive ways to improve everyday. Remembering something we learned helps lock in that new knowledge, ready to use for later! Let us know what other techniques help vet students learn well in the comments! #

Fall harvest is so important! Spring enough feed for an entire year is critical to the success of a herd. Don’t add another stressor, be patient and safe on the road!

We manage to find lots of species out there on the road in between calls. It’s nice to be able to help a snapping turtle to safety on the way to help some cows!

When you think about veterinary tools, stethoscopes and scalpels come to mind, but today, we got to use measuring tapes to make decisions to improve animal health.

Today, we weighed some cows and heifers to find out the best time to start heifers on a breeding program, based on their size and not their age.

At this farm, we found heifers were being bred later than they could, meaning a higher cost of rearing, and more heifers to care for!

We are excited to see how this information impacts productivity and profitability!

We love a textbook calving, just a cow getting down to work, no assistance required. Knowing when to leave her be and when to get involved is critical to health of both cow and calf!
