What's the breed Wednesday! Meet the Hungarian Puli. The Puli is one of the most distinctive dog breeds in the world, instantly recognizable by its unique, corded coat that resembles dreadlocks. Originally bred for herding livestock in Hungary, these intelligent and energetic dogs make fiercely loyal family companions.
Here is what makes the Puli so special:

* The famous coat: Their weather-resistant cords naturally form around one year of age, protecting them from both extreme cold and heat.
* Natural-born herders: They are incredibly agile, fast, and known for a unique herding style that sometimes involves jumping on the backs of stubborn livestock.
* Brilliant and alert: Pulis are highly intelligent and quick learners, making them excellent watchdogs and great candidates for dog sports like agility.
* Family companions: They form an intense bond with their owners, often acting as a shadow around the house, and thrive on being an active part of the family.

Because of their high energy and thick coats, they do best with active families who can provide plenty of mental stimulation and dedicated coat maintenance.

Heading back to school? Your pets are about to face a big transition too!
When the house suddenly goes from chaotic and fun to completely quiet, our furry friends can experience serious separation anxiety.

Here are four quick ways to prepare your pets for the new school routine:

Shift schedules now: Start adjusting feeding, walking, and wake-up times to match the school schedule before day one.

Maximize morning exercise: Burn off excess energy with a brisk walk or an intense play session before the family leaves for the day.

Provide mental stimulation: Keep their brains busy while you are gone by leaving out puzzle feeders, lick mats, or hidden treats.

Practice leaving: Leave the house for short periods this week so your pet gets used to being alone.

A little preparation goes a long way in keeping your pets calm, tired, and confident.

How does your pet handle the back-to-school shift? Share your best tips or drop a picture of your furry student in the comments below.

What's the breed Wednesday?
Meet the American Curl: The "Peter Pan" of Cats
If you have ever wanted a cat that stays a kitten forever, the American Curl might be your perfect match.
Known for their distinctively curled ears and playful personalities, these cats are as unique as they are loving.
Here are a few fascinating facts about this remarkable breed:
• The Magic Ears: American Curl kittens are actually born with straight ears. They begin to curl back into a smooth arc within three to five days of birth, setting into their permanent shape by four months. No two curls are exactly alike.
• Forever Young: They are nicknamed the "Peter Pan" of the cat world because they retain their energetic, joyful, and kitten-like curiosity throughout their entire adult lives.
• Low-Maintenance Coats: They come in both shorthair and longhair varieties. Because they have very little undercoat, their silky fur rarely mats and shedding is minimal.
• High Intelligence: These cats are natural problem solvers. Do not be surprised if they learn how to open cabinets or challenge you to a game of fetch.
• A Healthy Mutation: Unlike some other breeds with unique ear traits, the genetic mutation that creates the American Curl’s ears is completely natural and does not cause any underlying skeletal or health issues. They are robust, healthy, and frequently live up to 15 years or more.
Whether they are alerting you to their presence with soft, musical trilling sounds or sitting on your shoulder to see what you are cooking, American Curls love being right in the center of family life.

What's the breed Wednesday? Meet the Meet the Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the French Mastiff.
Famous for its massive head and deeply wrinkled expression, this ancient French breed is the ultimate gentle giant.
While they look incredibly imposing, they are actually calm, patient, and deeply devoted to their human families.
Fun fact: This is the exact breed that starred alongside Tom Hanks in the classic 1989 movie Turner & H***h.
Just be prepared if you bring one home—they are world-class droolers!

What's the breed Wednesday?
Meet the Japanese Bobtail, one of the oldest and most playful cat breeds in the world!
Famous for their unique "pom-pom" tails, no two bobtails look exactly alike—their tails are as individual as a human fingerprint. These highly energetic cats are known for their canine-like personalities. They love to play fetch, learn tricks, and can even be quite vocal when they want your attention.
Historically, they were so revered in Japan that they inspired the famous "Maneki-neko" or welcoming lucky cat statues seen in shops worldwide.
Whether they are splashing in water or leaping through the air with their extra-long hind legs, life with a Japanese Bobtail is never boring.

What's the breed Wednesday? Introducing the Rhodesian Ridgeback!
The Ridgie is a remarkable blend of athletic power, fierce loyalty, and gentle companionship.
Originally bred in Southern Africa to track lions, this large and dignified hound is famous for the unique ridge of hair running backward along its spine.
Inside the home, they are affectionate, surprisingly quiet, and love to lounge with their family. Outdoors, they are high-stamina athletes that thrive on running and hiking.
Because of their high intelligence, independent streak, and strong prey drive, Ridgebacks do best with experienced owners who can provide consistent, positive training and plenty of daily exercise.

With wildfire smoke affecting air quality across parts of Canada, here is what you need to know to keep your furry family members safe.

Limit outdoor time as much as possible. While bathroom breaks are necessary, skip the long walks and extended outdoor play until conditions improve. Keep windows and doors closed, run your air conditioner in recirculation mode, and use a HEPA air purifier if you have one.

Watch for signs of smoke irritation including coughing, watery eyes, sneezing, lethargy, or trouble breathing, and contact your veterinarian right away if you notice anything concerning. Flat-faced breeds, seniors, puppies, kittens, and animals with pre-existing conditions are especially vulnerable.

If you need to evacuate, take your animals with you and go early. Having a plan in place before conditions become severe makes all the difference.
