Happy World Sea Lion Day!
Sea lions are true ambassadors of our oceans and remind us why marine conservation matters. The doesn’t house sea lions but we are home to a quartet of their close relatives - Northern fur seals!

Sea lions and fur seals look similar and are closely linked as part of the pinniped group Otariidae - which means eared seal. How can you tell them apart? Here are some of the features to distinguish fur seals from sea lions:

* fur seals have much thicker fur
* fur seals are smaller than sea lions
* the size difference between males and females (sexual dimorphism) is greater in fur seals
* fur seals have a shorter nose than sea lions with eyes set closer together
* The ear flaps on a fur seal are larger and their flippers are smaller

You can visit our fur seals - Sofia, Mischa, Isadora, and Nika - in the Polar Extremes exhibit where we feature a daily seal talk at 2:30 p.m.!

Hop to it - it’s Frogmageddon 2026 at the Edmonton Valley Zoo! 🐸

This year, the zoo’s Rocky Mountain Northern Leopard Frog Conservation Program had great success in raising more than 1,000 tadpoles, soon to be released into the wild.

The Northern Leopard Frog is a species at risk in Western Canada, and its Rocky Mountain population is at risk of local extinction – that means gone forever! Alongside our partners at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and Vancouver Aquarium, we’re one of only three Canadian facilities working together to bring the population of these leaping legends back from the brink.

Since the program began in 2019, this is one of our biggest releases yet! Take a croak and guess the exact number of tadpoles that are about to make a splash in B.C. next week!

🦦 Happy World Otter Day! 🦦
Today we’re celebrating some of the zoo’s most playful and curious animals! Otters may be small, but they’re powerful swimmers, skilled hunters, and an important part of healthy aquatic ecosystems.

The North American river otter is part of the weasel family. A semi-aquatic species, they are equally at home in the water and on land. Did you know? Otters aren’t born knowing how to swim! When they’re around two months old, their mothers push them into the water and watch them carefully until they can swim on their own.
The Edmonton Valley Zoo is home to six North American river otters: Steve, Bow, Bridget and Dakota Pearl, as well as Missi and her son Lawrence, (pictured), who recently returned from Ecomuseum Zoo in Montreal! Next time you visit, be sure to say hello!

🎉 Happy Birthday to three of our Toggenburg goats - Merriweather, whose birthday is today, and Fauna & Maleficent who celebrated on May 23! 🐐🎂✨

All three beauties are turning seven years old and are ready to “kid” around!
Did you know? Toggenburg goats are one of the oldest known dairy goat breeds in the world and are easily recognized by their brown coats with distinctive white markings. They’re known for being hardy, curious, and very social animals! 🐐🌿

And of course, we can’t resist a little fairy tale magic… we hope Merriweather, Fauna and Maleficent had “sleeping BEAUTYS” of birthdays, full of treats, sunshine, and zero need for a royal wake-up call! 😴👑✨
Join us in wishing these three very happy birthdays! 🎉🐐

Born right here at the , Artemis is a graceful and stealthy ambassador for her wild northern cousins. 🐱🍁

🎉 Happy Birthday, Juliet! Our ring-tailed lemur is turning 17 years old today! 🐾🎂

Juliet is a favourite with guests and staff alike. Ring-tailed lemurs are only found in the wild on the island of Madagascar, and they rely heavily on forest habitats that are rapidly disappearing due to deforestation. 🌿🌍

That’s why conservation matters! Protecting lemur habitat in Madagascar helps ensure species like Juliet’s wild relatives can continue to thrive for generations to come. Every effort to support habitat protection and sustainable land use makes a difference.
Join us in wishing Juliet a very happy birthday today! 🎉🐒
