🚨 ANAPLASMOSIS: A TICK-BORNE DISEASE PET OWNERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

We recently had a patient at Chappelle Veterinary Clinic test positive for Anaplasma during routine blood testing—an important reminder that tick-borne diseases can sometimes be present even when a pet appears healthy.

Anaplasmosis is a bacterial infection transmitted by infected ticks, including black-legged (deer) ticks. Dogs are most commonly affected, although cats can also become infected.

🐾 Signs can include:
• Fever, lethargy or weakness
• Decreased appetite
• Joint pain, stiffness or lameness
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• In some cases, bruising, nosebleeds or other bleeding problems

The tricky part? Some infected dogs may show few or no obvious symptoms, which is why routine screening and preventive care can be so valuable.

A positive screening test indicates exposure to Anaplasma, but additional bloodwork or testing may be recommended to determine whether there is evidence of active disease and whether treatment is needed.

🕷️ Prevention is important.
✔️ Keep your pet on appropriate tick prevention
✔️ Check your pet for ticks after outdoor activities
✔️ Ask your veterinarian about tick-borne disease screening during routine wellness visits

🐾 Not Every Itchy Dog Has Allergies! 🐶

When your dog is scratching, licking, chewing their paws, or developing red and irritated skin, it’s easy to assume “It must be allergies!” But itching can have many different causes.

Fleas and other parasites, bacterial or yeast infections, skin infections, environmental or food allergies, and other medical conditions can all cause very similar symptoms.

🔍 That’s why finding the cause matters. Treating the itch without knowing why your pet is itchy may only provide temporary relief—or allow the underlying problem to continue.

Your veterinarian can examine your pet, recommend the appropriate testing when needed, and create a treatment plan based on the actual cause, not just the symptoms.

💚 An itchy pet deserves more than a guess. Let’s find the cause and help them feel comfortable again.

Myth Busting with the Alberta SPCA! 🕵️🐾

MYTH: All dogs can swim.

FACT: Not every dog is a natural swimmer. While some dogs can swim easily, others may struggle to stay afloat. Dogs with short snouts, heavy bodies or short legs can have a particularly difficult time swimming and may tire quickly.

Heading to the lake this summer with your dog? Keep a close eye on them whenever they’re near the water. A properly fitted life jacket can provide extra support for dogs who aren’t strong swimmers.

Puppy vaccination timing can look straightforward on paper, but maternally derived antibodies add an important layer of complexity.

For the DA2PP series, AAHA recommends beginning vaccination at 6–8 weeks of age and administering subsequent doses 2–4 weeks apart, with the final dose given after 16 weeks of age.

Those early maternal antibodies help protect puppies, but they can also interfere with the response to distemper and parvovirus vaccines, which is why timing across the series matters.
