A huge, heartfelt thank you to Dr. Alyssa for her incredibly in-depth and compassionate webinar on equine euthanasia and end-of-life care tonight.

Euthanasia is often treated like a “dirty word” in the horse world and in rescue. It’s a topic many people avoid discussing until they’re suddenly faced with difficult decisions. But the reality is that providing a peaceful, humane passing is one of the greatest gifts we can give our horses when the time comes.

Dr. Alyssa has been an invaluable part of our journey through countless euthanasias over the years. Especially when we were first starting our Peaceful Passing Program, she helped guide us through some incredibly difficult situations with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering focus on the horses’ welfare. Her support has made a lasting impact not only on our rescue, but on the horses and families we’ve been able to help.

We truly believe that every horse owner should have a basic understanding of end-of-life care, quality of life assessments, what to expect during euthanasia, and how to make these difficult decisions with confidence and compassion. Having the knowledge and tools before you’re in crisis can make an incredibly hard day just a little bit easier.

If you missed tonight’s webinar but would like access to the recorded session, it’s available with a $20 donation to HHERS. We cannot recommend it enough, it is one of the most important educational discussions a horse owner can have.

Thank you again, Dr. Alyssa Serenity Veterinary Services, for sharing your knowledge, answering tough questions, and helping horse owners navigate one of the hardest parts of loving our horses.

One of the biggest things we’ve learned through rescue is that education matters just as much as intervention. 💜

That’s exactly why we created the HHERS Head to Hoof Series, affordable online clinics designed to help horse owners learn more, feel more confident, and ultimately give their horses better care. Every single session also helps support the horses here at HHERS, which makes it a win for everyone involved.

These clinics aren’t just for experienced owners either. They’re for anyone who wants to learn more about nutrition, hoof care, medical care, senior horses, emergencies, end of life decisions, and everything in between. The horse world can be overwhelming sometimes, and having access to knowledgeable professionals matters.

If you missed the first two clinics, recorded versions are still available with a minimum $20 donation:
🐴 Equine Nutrition with Morgan from Stable Mind & Body: Equine Nutrition and Massage
🐴 Farrier & Hoof Care with Mckenna from Hidalgo Horseshoeing

And coming up next:

🎤 Featuring Dr. Alyssa Serenity Veterinary Services

For those who don’t know, Dr. Alyssa was actually our main vet at Westhills during the first few years of HHERS. She walked through some incredibly difficult cases with us over the years and has always approached end of life care with so much compassion and honesty. This is going to be an incredibly important and educational conversation for horse owners.

We currently need at least 10 more people signed up in order to make this clinic a success, and we would truly love the support. 💜

Sit, Stay, Heal

So, what is Animal Hospice?

Built upon the philosophy that death is a part of life, pet hospice addresses:

Pain Control
Educational Resources
Emotional Support for the families
Assistance with the transition between treatment and passing.

Animal hospice is palliative veterinary care, focused on the needs of the patient and family; on living life as fully and comfortably as possible until the time of death, and on attaining a degree of preparation for death.

Animal hospice is when the focus moves from CURING to CARING.

Emotional pain doesn’t equal a “weak” person; it takes immense strength to reach out for help. Pet hospice allows the guardian the opportunity to receive on-going support and encouragement to get the help they need.

In the end, what many people these days experience is a relationship with their pet, not an ownership. Therefore, we must make it OK for pet families to feel what they are feeling, to allow them the opportunity to receive on-going support and encourage them to reach out when the pain becomes overwhelming. Because experiencing emotional pain doesn’t make someone weak; rather, reaching out makes them stronger.

Navigating palliative care, end of life decisions, and the grief process can be overwhelming. Berkeley's Place has developed their Sit, Stay, Heal program to help pet owners through this, and will be presented over the next several weeks 🌈 Follow along for some invaluable support 💜

The pandemic precluded many guardians from being able to be with their companions and say goodbye as they crossed the Rainbow Bridge. For others, the question of navigating end of life care, hospice and terminally ill and aging pets weighs heavy. Our Sit, Stay, Heal program over the next two weeks will help you navigate this tender time in your pet's life.
