Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society - GEARS Our vision is simple: We are gearing towards a future where animals are treated with compassion and respect. (822791430RR0001)
Our purpose is to:

1.

Our mission is to provide force-free compassionate care as a foster home-based animal rescue; focusing on rehabilitation and responsible rehoming. Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society (GEARS) is a non-profit organization. Identify and take into immediate foster care, animals that are:
a. Stray, abandoned, or homeless
b. May face homelessness due to owner death or placement in a higher level of care
c. Owned by someone leaving an abusive situation

2. Train and rehabilitate rescued animals, bringing out their full potential. All animals will receive vet care as required, and will be vaccinated and spayed/neutered prior to adoption.

3. Find suitable approved foster and adoptive homes for rescued animals based on animal characteristics and an in-depth screening of potential homes.

4. Provide education and assistance to adoptive homes, ensuring the permanent welfare of the adopted animal.

5. Educate the public on GEARS mission, vision, and goals, as well as responsible pet ownership, animal interaction, and animal welfare.

6. Support and collaborate with local organizations and businesses with the goal of improving the lives of animals in Alberta.

Hi, I’m Andy! It’s hard to believe I was found as a stray because I’m a total love bug who takes my job as your personal sidekick very seriously. Wherever you go, I go! I’ll rest my giant head on your lap, gaze at you with my soulful eyes, and happily snuggle up for a nap (preferably right on top of you). My foster mom says my heart is just as big as my head!

I’m a friendly, affectionate guy who loves people and greets visitors with a wagging tail rather than a scary bark. I’ve made a great little buddy in my foster home, where I enjoy rambunctious play sessions with my miniature schnauzer foster brother. I can be pretty quiet until playtime begins, and then the fun really starts!

I’m learning my basic manners and catching on quickly, especially when treats are involved. I’m working on loose-leash walking, learning cues like sit, down, and wait, and would love to continue my education with my new family. I can get very excited when I spot other dogs on walks, and my curiosity about squirrels and rabbits means I have a bit of a prey drive. A home without cats would be best for me, and any food or high-value items around other dogs should be managed thoughtfully, as I’ve shown some resource guarding with my puppy foster brother.

At home, I’m settling in beautifully. I enjoy walks, car rides, sunny naps, couch time, and simply being wherever my people are. I can be crated when needed, although being left alone isn’t my favourite thing, and I’m still learning my house manners (a bag of puppy food was just too tempting to resist!). I’m getting better at relaxing and settling down, and I’m a gentle treat-taker who is eager to learn.

If you’re looking for a big, lovable companion who will follow you everywhere, keep your lap warm, and shower you with affection, I might just be your perfect match. Just make sure there’s room on the couch… and don’t expect much personal space! ❤️

BEHAVIOUR NOTE: Andy has been working on being left alone for longer periods of time. He has done great but his new home will need to continue working on this with him.

✨ Thankful Thursday ✨

Hi friends, it’s me Alumni Booth 🐾

I’m popping in with my best smile because today I get to show off something pretty special. Thanks to the amazing humans at Quilts4Pets Canada, our rescue received a beautiful donation of handmade kennel quilts — and I’ve personally tested them (multiple naps, all passed).

These quilts are heading to our shelter cats, giving them something soft, warm, and comforting to curl up on while they wait for their foster families. The kitties are going to love them.

Hi I’m Marbles,
I am young and fun and fullllllll of energy! I like to play with three toys at once. Here are a few of my favourite things: running stairs, play fighting with my foster brother (another cat), stealing his food, exploring and ripping up carboard. I also really love a comfortable nap in a cardboard box.

I am very brave and confident; it only takes me a day or so to adapt to new places. I like a good chin scratch but not being picked up. My foster parents say I add a cozy chaos to the house, looking to add it to yours!

Rescue Story: Rain and his siblings were brought into GEARS' care after being found as strays.

Hi there, I’m Rain. When I am in new surroundings with new people I might take a couple days to warm up and be more brave. Until then if you let me loose, I might find a place to hide like behind a toilet or in the tub. But I don’t like to sleep alone at night so if you close the door on me, I will try to open it. Hope you don’t mind a nighttime snuggler. When I feel more comfortable with your pets, boy do I rev up like a motor engine. I have a calm demeanour, average energy level and use my litter box professionally. I am mainly quiet, only occasionally letting out a meow and won’t disturb your sleep by being a nightcrawler. In my last foster home, I was with other cats and they were okay for the most part. I really like that catnip spray so if you put that on my favourite toys, I’ll be sure to fully enjoy them.

That’s me for now, I hope to find my forever home with you.

Hi, I am Charlie,

I am a young friendly affectionate boy and I am always ready to play. I'd love to play with anyone and everyone. My cat wand is my favourite. But just to let you know, I might playfully give you a love bite to tell you to play with me. When I have gotten my fill of playing, I am very happy to cuddle up with you and watch TV.

I do really well on my own while my people are away at work. I do enjoy being with a family with more than one person. I am also a great eater, making meal time very easy.

One thing my foster family noticed is I run on low fur mode so I don't actually shed much. But If possible I'd really like a carpet like scratch post because I don't seem to care for the cardboard scratchers.
If you are looking for a gentle prince, I would love to join your family.

Hi there, I’m Lutz.

I’m a sweet little girl with a big personality, and I’m always ready to keep you entertained. I may be small, but I’ve already mastered the important kitten skills: playing, exploring, getting into things I probably shouldn’t, and looking ridiculously cute while doing it.

I love being around my humans and, will quickly become your shadow. When I’m not busy investigating my surroundings, I’m happy to settle down for some cuddles and attention. I’m still figuring out the world, so I’d love a family who will give me plenty of playtime, patience and love as I grow into the wonderful cat I’m meant to be.

I’m litter trained and ready to find my forever home. All I need now is a family who understands that adopting a kitten means signing up for a lifetime of love, laughs, zoomies and the occasional tiny bit of mischief.

Hi there, I'm Knight!

I'm a friendly, playful guy who just loves being around my people. When you walk in the door, I can barely contain myself, my whole body wiggles with excitement! And when you leave, I'll admit I get a little sad, but not for long. I do like my kennel, which has become my safe space for sleeping and for the times I'm home alone.

I'm great about potty training! I let you know I need to go out by waiting at the door or giving it a little scratch, and I rarely have accidents. I'm getting pretty good at my manners and simple commands too, like "sit", "stay", leave it", "back" and"wait. Sometimes it's hard, but I'm trying my best. I definitely think that belly rubs are pretty much the best thing in the world, and I'm great with the children in my foster family too.

Fetch is my favourite game, and I never get tired of my stuffies- they're basically my best friends. I also have a funny habit of "borrowing" shoes and things that smell like my people. I promise it's not mischief, it's just my way of feeling close to you!

Walks are something I'm still growing into. I get pretty excited and tend to pull on the leash, but my foster parents are working on that with me too. I'm friendly with people I meet on walks, but I do get nervous around loud noises (like trucks driving by), and when I see another dog or cat, I get distracted and can forget my polite manners for a minute. I want to please my family, so we are working on this together. At home though, I'm much more relaxed and quiet. I rarely bark (usually at something I hear outside), otherwise I'm happy to settle in and be calm with my favourite people.

I'm going to grow into a bigger dog, so a home with a bigger yard to run around in would be a dream for me. But I promise, I'm just as happy curling up quietly at your feet.

I can't wait to find my furever home. Could that be you?
