Meet Oakley — this happy girl came in to see us after her face suddenly became very puffy and swollen! 😢
She had an allergic reaction, which can happen quickly and look quite dramatic — often due to an insect bite, sting, or something they’ve eaten.

Thankfully, Oakley’s family acted fast and brought her straight to Vet ER, and with prompt care and treatment, she’s already feeling much better and back to her tail-wagging self! 💕

👉 If your pet ever develops sudden swelling, hives, vomiting, or trouble breathing, seek veterinary care immediately. Allergic reactions can progress quickly and become life-threatening.

We’re so glad Oakley is okay — she’s a great reminder that quick action makes all the difference! 🩺🐾

Mushroom season is here, and while those little fungi might look harmless, many varieties are highly toxic to dogs and cats. Symptoms of mushroom poisoning can appear within minutes to hours and may include:

* Vomiting & diarrhea
* Lethargy or weakness
* Drooling
* Seizures
* Organ failure — and in severe cases, it can be fatal

What to do if your pet eats a mushroom:

* Do NOT wait for symptoms — some toxins act fast
* Seek emergency veterinary care immediately

Happy Veterinary Tech Assistant Appreciation Week!

Today we get to introduce you to Lexa, our newest TA who we haven’t gotten to introduce to you before!

“My name is Lexa, I am 22 years old and I am currently enrolled in my 4th year at the UofA in the Bachelor of Science in Animal health program. My goal is to become a large animal vet! I have a 4 year old German shepherd named Koda who loves to play balls, swim in the river and cuddle. I just started working at VetER in June as a TA and I have learned so much. I feel so lucky to get to be a part of this amazing team of people”

This week we are celebrating our tech assistants! It is Veterinary Tech Assistant Appreciation Week, and so of course we have to take this opportunity to recognize this amazing group of people. They are truly the unsung heroes of emergency veterinary medicine. They are involved in all areas of care for our patients, and your furry family members.

- They set up and maintain clean warm accommodations for pets
- They take the extra time to ensure dogs get lots of chances to stretch their legs during bathroom breaks
- They ensure the nervous cats get safe hiding spaces, or have bird TV set up
- They offer comfort to both the patients as well as the clients
- They assist our technologists in many things - taking x-rays, blood sampling, setting up monitoring equipment during procedures, etc
- They clean up (a lot) of messes
- They take the time to hand feed pets who are having a difficult time eating
- They prep for emergency procedures and treatments, making sure we are always ready to go!
- And so much more that we simply don't have the space to list!

And they do everything with compassion, speed, and heart! Vet ER would not function without their tireless support. We appreciate our assistants each and every day! Drop a thank-you in the comments and help us celebrate the amazing humans behind the scrubs!

Traveling with Pets? Safety First!

Summer road trips and vacations are fun—but traveling with pets comes with serious safety risks if you're not prepared.

Common travel dangers:

- Heatstroke from sitting in a hot car—even for a few minutes
- Unrestrained pets can be injured in sudden stops or accidents
- Stress & anxiety from unfamiliar environments
- Car sickness and dehydration on long drives

Travel safety tips:

- NEVER leave your pet in a parked car—even with windows cracked
- Use a crash-tested carrier or seatbelt harness
- Bring plenty of water, breaks, and familiar comforts
- Keep ID tags and microchip info updated
- Pack a pet first aid kit and your vet's contact info

If your pet shows signs of distress or gets injured while traveling, head to the nearest emergency vet right away. We're here 24/7 to help—no matter where the road takes you.

Wildlife Encounters: Protect Your Pets!

Summer hikes, backyard adventures, and late-night walks can lead to unexpected run-ins with wildlife—and the results can be dangerous.

Common wildlife threats to pets:

- Snakes 🐍 – Venomous bites can be life-threatening
- Coyotes & foxes 🐺 – Can injure or attack pets, even in suburban areas
- Raccoons & skunks 🦝 – May carry rabies or cause painful wounds
- Porcupines 🦔 – Quills can embed deeply and require emergency removal
- Bats 🦇 – A high rabies risk if bitten or scratched

Pet safety tips:

- Keep pets leashed on trails and at night
- Supervise outdoor time, especially near wooded or brushy areas
- Don’t leave food outside—it's a wildlife magnet
- Make sure rabies vaccines are up to date

If your pet is bitten, scratched, or attacked by wildlife, seek emergency care immediately—even small wounds can become serious fast. We’re here 24/7 to help!
