✨ Happy RVT Month! ✨

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible Registered Veterinary Technologists who make our hospital what it is. ❤️

RVTs are the calm hands during stressful moments, the advocates for our patients, the ones monitoring every breath under anesthesia, placing catheters, running lab work, assisting with procedures, comforting nervous patients, educating their families—and somehow keeping everything moving behind the scenes.
From dogs and cats to rabbits, birds, reptiles, and all the unique patients in between, our RVTs bring knowledge, compassion, skill, and a whole lot of heart to every patient they care for. 🐶🐱🐰🦜🦎

There is so much that happens behind the scenes that often goes unseen, but it makes an enormous difference.

To our RVTs: thank you for everything you do, every single day. We’re incredibly lucky to have you on our team. 💙

After a long recovery, we’re so happy to see Watermalon feeling like herself again! She broke her leg and had quite the journey of healing, but you’d never know it watching her now. She’s using that leg so well and keeping our staff on their toes! 💨

🩺🩸 Small patient, big medical needs! 🐾

This little sugar glider came to us from Infinite Woofs Animal Rescue - Small Animal Team rescue for a medical assessment and bloodwork. Working with sugar gliders can be challenging — they’re tiny, fast, incredibly strong for their size, and can be understandably stressed by handling. They’re also very good at hiding signs of illness, which means regular veterinary care and appropriate diagnostics are especially important.

For this patient, sedation allowed our team to safely and calmly perform a thorough examination and collect a blood sample while minimizing stress and reducing the risk of injury to both the patient and our team.

Once the bloodwork was collected and the procedure was complete, it was time for recovery! ❤️‍🩹 And apparently, the first order of business upon waking up was making sure the snacks were still available. 🍇😂

We also want to give a huge shoutout to Infinate Woofs Animal Rescue for making veterinary care a priority. Providing rescued animals with appropriate nutrition, husbandry, preventative care, and veterinary attention can make an enormous difference in their long-term health and quality of life.

Tiny patients deserve big care. 💕

🌟 Celebrating our Small Companion Mammal Specialist! 🌟

We’re incredibly proud of our Small Companion Mammal Specialist Veterinarian, Dr. Teresa Bousquet, who took the stage at the Exotic 365 Veterinary Conference earlier this September! 🐹🐍

Dr. Bousquet presented three lectures sharing her expertise in exotic animal medicine:

🐹 “Speaking for the Wheakers: All Things Guinea Pigs” — diving into the unique medical needs, challenges, and care of one of our most beloved small mammal patients.

🍴"What the Hay? The Importance of Hay to Herbivorous Exotic Companion Mammals" - Delving into the evolution of grasses, how it effected the dentition of exotic mammals and the importance of hay in their diets.

🐍 “Dystocia in a Kenyan Sand Boa Secondary to Ectopic Pregnancy” — presenting her work on a recently published (by her and Dr. Daren!) case exploring dystocia in this species and sharing valuable clinical insight with fellow exotic animal professionals.

We love seeing our team members not only providing exceptional care to their patients, but also sharing their knowledge and contributing to the ever-growing field of exotic animal medicine. 🖤

🦔 IT’S NOT A HEDGEHOG! 🦔

Can you guess what this little spiky critter is? 👀
Hint: It’s a mammal, it loves a good bug buffet, and it’s native to Madagascar! 🌴🐛

Meet the TENREC! 🥹

Tenrecs may look a little like hedgehogs, but they’re actually a completely different group of mammals. There are more than 30 species, ranging from tiny, shrew-like animals to the familiar spiny varieties.

A few fun tenrec facts:
🐛 They’re big fans of insects and other invertebrates.
🌙 Many species are nocturnal, meaning they’re most active after dark.
👃 Their long, sensitive snouts help them sniff out food and explore their environment.
🦔 Not all tenrecs have spines! Some are covered in soft or bristly fur.
🌴 Madagascar is home to an amazing diversity of tenrec species.
