One of the biggest mistakes in bed-stay training? Letting your puppy decide when the exercise is over.

Teaching your puppy to go to their bed is only half the lesson. A reliable bed-stay means they understand that they need to remain there until you give them permission to leave.

Reward your puppy for staying in position, gradually build duration, and always finish with a clear release cue like “Okay!” This helps your puppy understand that the exercise doesn’t end when the treats or attention stop.

Does your puppy bite or nip when you try to touch their paws, ears, or belly?

Your puppy may not be comfortable with being handled yet, and that’s an important skill to start teaching early. Use short, positive handling exercises to help your puppy build confidence and learn that being touched is nothing to worry about.

Make gentle handling part of your daily puppy training routine, and always work at a pace your puppy is comfortable with. The confidence you build now can make nail trims, grooming, and veterinary visits much easier down the road.

Does your puppy turn family dinner into a barking, jumping frenzy? 🐶

If your puppy is constantly begging for food or demanding attention at the dinner table, don’t give them more opportunities to practise those behaviours. Instead, teach them to settle on their bed or use their crate to help manage the situation while you build better habits.

The key is what you do BEFORE dinner. Spend 20 minutes playing tug, exercising, or training your puppy to give them a healthy outlet for their physical and mental energy. A puppy whose needs have been met is better prepared to settle while you enjoy your meal.

Your dog needs exercise, but don’t miss the opportunity to build your relationship at the same time.

Instead of making every outlet something your dog does independently, find activities you can enjoy together. Bring a tug toy on your walk, play fetch, use a Frisbee, or find another game your dog loves that keeps you involved in the fun.

Exercise can burn energy. Interactive play builds engagement, connection, and value for you too. That’s time well spent with your dog.

How long should your puppy spend in their crate? There is no ideal amount of time. What matters is how you use their time outside of it.

Training, play, exercise, affection and meeting their basic needs can help your puppy feel ready to settle when it’s time to go back in. Focus on making their time out of the crate count.

Want to give your dog more freedom before you completely trust their recall?

A long line gives your dog room to explore while you maintain control when you need it. It’s one of our favourite tools for recall training, retrieving, and gradually building the reliability your dog needs before earning more off-leash freedom.

Instructor Kayl trained her dog Five-Alive on a long line for his first year. Until you’re at least 90% confident your dog will come when called, don’t test the recall. Use a management tool like a long line while you continue building consistency and reliability.

Freedom is earned through reliability. Train first, test later.

There’s nothing wrong with loving on your dog, but make sure your dog is comfortable with it too. ❤️

Hugs, kisses and getting face-to-face can feel completely normal to us, but not every dog enjoys that kind of close contact. Pay attention to your dog’s comfort level and body language, especially with dogs you don’t know well.

And when kids are involved, be extra careful. A child lying on, hugging, or putting their face close to a dog isn’t something we recommend, no matter how cute the moment may look. Give dogs space and make safe interactions the priority.

P*e pads can make puppy house training more confusing than it needs to be.

When you bring a new puppy home, it’s a great opportunity to establish a clear routine from day one. Rather than teaching that going to the bathroom inside is okay in certain places, start showing your puppy that outside is where potty happens.

Clear expectations and consistency make it easier for your puppy to understand what you want and build better house training habits from the start.

Loose leash walking starts with focus, and sometimes one technique isn’t enough.

When you’re training a young dog like Maggie, you may need a combination of tools to get their attention back on you. Start with a “Look at me,” use a gentle tap if needed, or reset and redirect your dog away from the distraction before continuing your walk.

If focus is still a struggle, consider the environment. Reduce the distractions, create more distance, or take your leash training back indoors until your dog is ready for more.

Set your dog up to win. Get the focus first, then say, “Let’s go.”

My rule for better door manners? Good choices unlock what your dog wants.

Your dog wants to go outside, so use that as the reward. Ask for a sit, begin opening the door, and if they break position, simply close it and reset. When they can hold that sit with the door open, release them with an “Okay.”
No treat needed. The behaviour you want earns access to the thing your dog wants.
