With Halloween a day away, it's important to know what to do for a dog who is fearful of fireworks. First and foremost, don't coddle your dog if he becomes scared. When you tell your dog "it's okay baby" He thinks you are telling him it is ok to act fearful. It's not. You want to turn his fear response into a happy response. Make it a game. Clap your hands and get excited and playful. Jump up and down and be happy. Throw treats to your dog, turn his fear into fun. You can practice this ahead of time for the best results. I also recommend putting cotton in your dogs ears and turn up the radio or TV, so that fireworks are not as loud and scary.

We are no longer breeding Lagotto Romagnolo dogs. There has been yet another disease detected in the breed that is, at this time incurable and there is no test for it. As much as I loved this breed, I cannot, in good conscience continue to promote and breed them. Hopefully there will be a test at some point in the future, but until then, I cannot recommend anyone purchase a Lagotto. The newest disease is CA, Cerebellar Abiotrophy. The disorder is due to loss of neurons in the cortex of the cerebellum. This disorder causes affected dogs to have difficulty keeping balance and controlling their movements.
They become clumsy, have difficulty walking and can have consistent tremors. They eventually need to be euthanized. THERE IS NO CURE OR TEST AT THIS TIME. No matter what a breeder tells you. I bred for many many years with no sign of CA in any of my dogs and then suddenly it showed up. Save yourself the heart ache and do not get a Lagotto. More info and video can be viewed here.
