Horsemanship with Liz Liz is a Horsemanship coach serving Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. Liz provides a safe space for learning and exploration of horsemanship.

She is known for being a kind, empathetic, and supportive teacher who brings fun and laughter to lessons. With over 20 years of experience, Liz has explored various disciplines in both English and Western riding, as well as driving and distance riding. Her focus on foundational horsemanship has led her to become a competent trainer who enjoys problem-solving, young horse development, and liberty w

ork. Much of Liz’s knowledge and skill were acquired while working for Jonathan Field, where she worked as his assistant for 7 years. She continues to learn from him, and the information she shares strongly links to Jonathan’s program, supporting those who learn from him as well.

We had fun today!

Asking the horses to push the flintstone car provided some great lessons on timing, release, reading the horse and how something like this can either build or destroy confidence.

Thank you Kellie Leyen Horse in Hand Ranch Ltd. for this fun obstacle!

A little inspiration for this morning - watching this nice first ride with Jonathan Field Horsemanship

I liked watching the relaxation and ease in Jonathan and watching Zee awake and attentive, searching for answers he knows he can find :)

We are mountain ready with a shiny new set of shoes thanks to Joe McLean!

Fergus has been out of shoes since he came to me, apart from a month last September. His feet have really benifited from this along with short trim cycles. His mind also needed a break from shoes. The procedure of a shoeing visit was stressful and he would have a lot of defensive behaviours that made the whole event unpleasant for everyone and frankly dangerous. I can hardly remember that Fergus now !

Things we do to help Fergus :

Movement before appointments (nothing wild, just a nice trot around to warm the body, and settle the nerves and bring his awareness to me)

Shoeing in an open space - no crossties or tight spaces.

Opportunity for movement between feet - take a break and shake off any tension that has being building. This might just be a short walk

Repeat certain processes beyond being “done”. Tapping with the hammer extra with no intention of driving a nail, move legs around into different positions and wait for relaxation.

Thank you Joe for not only your expert skills but also your willingness to take extra time, have extra patience, and for being an important part of helping Fergus change his opinion of practitioners ! i
