Very interesting video! When we begin to understand the natural dynamics and leadership roles of our canines, we can better comprehend them and the possible reasons for their actions and reactions.

I especially appreciate how this video briefly touches on the internal biases scientists have had when studying wolf behaviour. When the researchers studying wolves were mostly male, they operated on the assumption that male wolves were leading the pack. These internal biases blinded them to the possibility that females could be natural leaders in wolf packs.

I am not undermining the work of previous researchers; rather, I suggest that when dealing with the inner workings of a species separate from us, we must be prepared to have an open mind. It’s likely that wolves operate on a system of knowing and understanding each other and the world that is distinct from our own.

This also raises the question: what internal biases are we falling victim to when working with our own dogs? When we assume they think and feel the way we do, we unintentionally undermine their nature and often complicate their realities. It’s true that canines think and feel—strongly—but not in the same way that humans do.

ITS OFFICIAL!
Sherry’s flights are booked and she will be here on October 19th for our PAWSItively Fun Event!

Want to know a little about Sherry and why spending a day with her is a good choice for you and your dog?

“In 2011 I completed a dog behaviour course done by Brad Pattison. He studied coyotes in the city of Calgary for years. He was the host of “At The End of the Leash” which was on TV for many years.

After I worked for a few years, where I hosted many large dog training events, I continued my education online. Through seminars, weekend course I grew my knowledge of dog behaviour. I expanded my knowledge on nutrition because I knew it was part of helping me assess a dog’s behaviour.

I sat on the Board of Directors at Brooks Animal Protection Society for 4 years. During that time I could assess dogs and help staff handle the dogs.

I have taken many agility courses and workshops, scent training and workshops. Now I compete, when I have time 🤣, with Reba. We have had some success but it is a work in progress.”

Hey there! I’m Whitney Kay, originally from Alberta and now proudly calling Cowichan Valley home. Dogs have been my constant companions since childhood, starting with Daisy, a Bichon/Shih Tzu who tucked me into bed every night, to my current sidekick Stella, a spirited Heeler Aussie Shepherd mix.

Growing up on a ranch instilled in me a deep respect for grassroots values and the importance of nurturing a confident mindset in our canine companions. I am also a certified teacher in both BC and Alberta, bringing valuable skills to communicate complex ideas in straightforward ways—perfect for helping families like yours understand and connect with their dogs.

What truly drives me? It’s the joy of unraveling the mysteries behind our dogs’ behaviors and motivations. I believe in a mindful approach to training, viewing our dogs as mirrors reflecting our emotions, anxieties, and actions. By understanding them, we often find insights into ourselves. My goal? To help you cultivate a calm, safe, and harmonious bond with your dog, making them the perfect companion for all your adventures together.

Let’s embark on this journey together—where understanding meets companionship.
