Today was an incredible day at DVS!
🐈 Everyone is still running on adrenaline after spaying and neutering 33 cats for our Barn Buddies program!

There was an incredible amount of interest in bringing this program back and we are sure glad we did. Today was extremely successful and we had so much fun doing it.. we’re already planning our next!

What is an RVT?
RVT stands for Registered Veterinary Technologist.

An RVT is a trained and credentialed veterinary professional who works alongside veterinarians to provide medical care to animals. In Canada, the exact title and registration requirements can vary by province.

🐾 What does an RVT do?

Depending on their workplace and scope of practice, an RVT may:

🩺 Monitor patients under anesthesia
💉 Administer medications and injections
🧪 Collect blood, urine, and other samples and perform laboratory testing
🩹 Place and maintain IV catheters and provide fluid therapy
❤️ Monitor vital signs and assist with emergency care
🦷 Perform dental cleanings and dental radiographs
📷 Take diagnostic radiographs and assist with imaging
🏥 Provide inpatient nursing and postoperative care
🐕 Educate clients about nutrition, medications, preventative care, and treatment plans
🐾 Assist veterinarians with surgery and medical procedures, including surgical prep and anesthesia
📋 Maintain detailed medical records

RVTs are essentially the nursing and technical professionals of veterinary medicine, although their training and scope of practice are specific to veterinary care.

And since October is RVT Appreciation Month, it’s a great time to recognize just how much RVTs contribute to patient care and the veterinary team. ❤️🐾

🩺 We are so very fortunate at DVS to have such an incredible lineup of technicians. These ladies wear so many hats on any given day. They are phlebotomists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, surgical assistants, lab and diagnostic techs, dental assistants, therapists, janitors, and I assure you the list goes on.

🐾 Most people don’t understand the full scope of the technologists role in the clinic. They often get thought of as ‘professional puppy/kitten cuddlers’ however, their training and certifications allow them to be so much more.

💕 This month we will be recognizing our amazing technicians, who they are, and when and where you can expect to see them around the clinic!

🦄 If you see one here that you recognize, be sure to tell us your experience, share a story, or something you love about them, and we will do the same!

A huge welcome back to Dr. Rheanne. While we hope she enjoyed her 18 month maternity leave, we are so grateful to have her back in the clinic.

👩‍⚕️ Dr. Rheanne does a variety of things around the clinic; from small animal medicine and surgery, to large animal, on-call, and equine!

🐴 And in case you didn’t know.. Dr. Rhe is also certified by the CVMA for equine acupuncture.

Potential donors should be:

✔️ Healthy and even-tempered
✔️ At least 25 kg (55 lbs)
✔️ Between 1–8 years old
✔️ Up to date on vaccinations/titres
✔️ On heartworm & tick preventative medication (recommended)

‼️ REAL CASE ‼️

This dog presented to us with urinary issues and a recurring UTI that would not resolve with medications. X-rays were recommended to the owner for further diagnostics and the owner agreed - I’m sure you can imagine our faces when we saw what appeared on the screen! Unfortunately surgery was the only option for this little lady and these are what we pulled out - A total of 228 stones!!! We are happy to report that the dog is doing very well after surgery and the stones have been sent off to find out the type so we are prepared to prevent any future stones.

🐶 Bladder Stones in Dogs: Know the Signs 🩺

Bladder stones, also called uroliths, are mineral formations that can develop in a dog’s urinary bladder. They can cause discomfort, urinary tract problems, and in some cases, a potentially life-threatening urinary blockage.

🔎 Signs to watch for:
• Frequent urination or repeated attempts to urinate
• Straining or taking longer than usual to urinate
• Blood in the urine
• Urinating in the house unexpectedly
• Dribbling or passing only small amounts of urine
• Licking the urinary/genital area more than usual
• Pain or discomfort when urinating
• Changes in appetite, energy, or behaviour

🚨 Urinary blockage is an emergency. If your dog is repeatedly trying to urinate but producing little or no urine, seek veterinary care immediately. A complete blockage can quickly become life-threatening.

Diagnosis may include a physical examination, urinalysis, bloodwork, X-rays, and/or ultrasound. Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the stones and may include a prescription diet, medical management, or surgical removal.

💧 Prevention matters! Maintaining good hydration, feeding an appropriate diet, and monitoring urinary health can help reduce the risk of recurrence in dogs prone to certain types of stones.

🐾 If you notice a change in your dog’s urinary habits, don’t wait it out. Early veterinary assessment can help prevent complications.

Dixie & Trixie were brought to us yesterday as surrenders. They are both WONDERFUL dogs and any home would be lucky to have them but we are hoping they can go to a home where they have room to run and perhaps even a job to do. They were raised on a farm and are very familiar with cattle and horses. Because of their breeds and herding instincts we are requesting a home with no smaller dogs. They get along great with bigger dogs and are extremely affectionate towards people. Please contact Wildrose Humane Society for more information on how to adopt.

Dixie & Trixie are searching for a loving home after the heartbreaking loss of their owner. These sweet girls are gentle, affectionate companions who are ready to share their love with a new family. They can be a little shy when meeting someone new, but they settle in quickly. Within just a few minutes, they're rolling over for belly rubs and happily soaking up all the attention they can get! They were also wonderful with everyone they met at the clinic, including men, and their kind, easygoing personalities shine through any chance they get! 🥰

Each girl has her own unique charm. At 8 years old, Dixie is a calm, relaxed gal who loves staying close to her people, while Trixie (6 years old) is a little more active and has excellent recall. Both girls love treats, travel well in the car, and are happiest simply being with their people. 🐶💝
