NEXT DI MEOW reduced cost spay/neuter clinic: Wedesday, April 15th!

This is a busy time of the year for vets. If you know someone who has a cat yet to be spayed or neutered, please have them get in touch asap in case we can squeeze them in! It can take several weeks to book a surgery, and cats can be pregnant as young as 5 months (in rare cases even less time)

Call 250-335-1209 for further details about how we can help save on costs. Thank you for spreading the word about DI MEOW's volunteer service to help us maintain the success we have worked so hard to accomplish as a community.

Kitty Kat Pals had over 200 cats in foster situations awaiting adoption last summer when they agreed to take on seven Denman kittens from two unexpected, and rapidly maturing litters in immediate need of placement.

On the female front, a few facts for those who may not know:

A cat's heat cycle (estrus) typically lasts 1 to 2 weeks (7–10 days), although it can range from 3 to 20 days. The cycle can repeat every 2 to 3 weeks, creating a near-constant, or very frequent, cycle throughout the breeding season until the cat is spayed or becomes pregnant.

Reoccurrence: If a cat does not mate, she will go out of heat for only about 7 days (ranging 2–19 days) before returning to heat.

Breeding Season: While indoor cats may cycle year-round, outdoor cats generally experience heat cycles from spring to fall.

Early Spaying: Experts recommend spaying between 3–5 months of age to prevent these cycles and accidental pregnancies.

Early neutering is also important and can prevent the spraying males typically engage in otherwise. 🐾

Just a heads up... don't be fooled!

This is a screenshot of a post that I've just removed from this page. It briefly appeared here under the last Missing Cat post.

Please be aware that the company named 'Pet Rescue Company' has a FB page and the contact number is for San Diego, Ca. Also, the person that was encouraging contact with that supposed business has a fictitious FB page. They have now been blocked, which means they won't even see this followup.

Unfortunately, there are opportunists out there who will take advantage of vulnerable folks desperate for reunion with a lost companion animal, etc. And I suspect they are always scanning the net for lost cat or dog posts on social media, given the speed with which they landed here today.

This comment isn't intended to discourage anyone from involving a drone search in situations where that may be warranted (and the practise approved by neighbours who value their privacy), etc, but as a warning when you see prompts like this 'ad' pop up (likely a bot) not to simply take them at face value. 🐾

Thank you." - Max Rogers

Max adds that her kitty's coat is medium length.

Hey folks,

Just a heads up that the article appearing in the January 30th Barnacle about DI MEOW has been erroneously credited to me (Fireweed), when in fact it was written by Tony Gregson.

DI MEOW was invited by DIRA chair Jenny Balke to give a presentation at the January 12th meeting. Tony was there taking notes for DIRA, and later turned his overview of my presentation into an article for the Barnacle.

As a writer myself, and former newspaper columnist, I would never take credit for anyone else's initiative. (Let alone insert my own name six times in an article about my own presentation!) I also have my own style of delivery as a writer, of course. So when you read the article on page 5 of the January issue, please bear in mind that Tony should have been credited. He has graciously agreed that this clarification is in order. We've sent a brief letter to the Barnacle for hopeful inclusion in the next issue.

DI MEOW is a team effort. One thing the Barnacle overview of my presentation left out is the fact that as a registered charity we have a Board of Directors! These awesome allies are Alistair Schroff, Deborah McCall, Cheryl Henkelman and Mike Nestor.

We very much appreciate Tony, Jenny and all of our supporters of course for helping 'Make Every One Wanted.' From profiling our reduced cost/spay neuter program, to encouraging refundables to our bin at the bottle depot. We are truly a community-driven success story!

Please reach out if you or someone you know could use our help or would like further details.

Thanks all! -Fireweed, DI MEOW co-founder

Dear friends of Denman Island MEOW,

With 2025 now coming to a close, we'd like to thank everyone who has supported our efforts to help Make Every One Wanted here over the past 20 + years! And remind you that today is the final day to contribute if you would like to receive a 2025 tax receipt for any financial donation. Please continue to add your refundables to our bin at the Recycling Centre in the new year, as this does eventually add up!

Vet costs have only increased over the last two decades of course, and we need everyone's help to maintain our hard won success as a rural community free of feral colonies. A large number of the spays and neuters DI MEOW facilitated this year resulted from just two unaltered females, acquired as barn cats.

Within less than a year, these 2 had turned into 11 cats on the property, with one of the momma cats already pregnant again. The spay/neuter costs associated with this one situation alone were in excess of $3000. Kudos not only to DI MEOW team members Alistair Schroff and Mike Nestor for their many hours involved in monitoring, prepping for, and eventual trapping of all of these cats, but to Annie Danko and Valerie Ingram for their additional efforts and absolutely STELLAR assistance!

We'd also like to thank Kitty Kat Pals in Courtenay for being willing to take 7 of the kittens into their foster program (we covered most of the associated vet bills), and encourage everyone to support their responsible adoption procedure. Anyone interested in welcoming a new feline family member through KKP is appropriately vetted, and charged a very reasonable adoption fee of $320 (all cats ready for rehoming have already been altered, chipped, vaccinated, etc.) Yes, you do have to get on a waiting list, but this is by far the most affordable way to acquire a healthy new feline family member.

As an entirely volunteer run, registered nonprofit, DI MEOW is only mandated to assist lower income families and individuals with reduced cost spay/neuters. We do not have funds available to assist with any other procedures associated with responsible feline care. However, we are dedicated to maintaining our community's notable success to date! So please don't hesitate to let any of your friends and neighbours know about the importance of timely intervention in the reproductive cycle, and that we are here to help make that happen regardless of financial circumstances.

Thanks everyone, and Happy New Year to all! - Fireweed, for DIMEOW
