Hunters were designed to mimic the challenges of the hunt field, testing style, brilliance, and natural ability. But according to Geoff Case, USEF R Judge, trainer, and clinician, today’s hunter ring has strayed far from those origins.

“Every time you change something and it makes something more difficult, it makes it harder for the horses to go around like that,” he said. “I feel like the hunters were creating dressage with jumps in the way. Essentially it’s the same eight-jump pattern everywhere you go.”

The result? A discipline that increasingly looks like performance art, polished, robotic, and predictable, rather than a sport designed to test horse and rider.

Case believes hunters have become overly rigid in penalizing anything that deviates from a narrow picture of perfection. Cross-cantering, missed lead changes, even headshaking are all faults that weigh heavily on a score. “It was supposed to mimic the hunt field,” he noted. “And now it’s something else entirely.”

That rigidity discourages brilliance. Horses are worked until they are flat and expressionless, their personality stripped away to avoid deductions. “To be crisp and jump their best, they need to be a bit fresh,” Case explained. “But we’ve worked the brilliance out of them. You take the personality out.”

What a rollercoaster ride at the Silver Series Playoffs! 🎢 From unexpected setbacks to incredible triumphs, this weekend truly tested our grit, and I couldn't be prouder of how we fought through it.
The week started out rocky when I suddenly fell ill and was forced to scratch all of Friday's classes. It was a heartbreaking start, but by Saturday, I managed to pull it together. Larry and I entered the ring for the Classic, delivering a beautiful double clear to finish 6th in a massive field! 🐴💪
Heading into Sunday, we were feeling fit, fast, and ready. Larry gave me everything he had, jumping his heart out to anchor another spectacular double clear and a blazing super jump-off. Unfortunately, a bit of pilot error on my part caused us to miss jump 7, resulting in an elimination. It wasn't the fairytale finish we wanted, but the way Larry jumped was a massive victory in itself! 🌟
Beyond the playoff rings, we are also thrilled to share that Amarosa Farm captured a Top 10 finish in the prestigious $10K Tack Room Challenge! 🏆
This season—and surviving this crazy weekend—would be absolutely impossible without the village behind us. Words cannot express my gratitude for:
• My phenomenal trainer, Debra McCourt, for always guiding us to our best.
• Our world-class home team: our veterinarians, farrier, Brooks Feed and bodywork specialists who keep Larry feeling like an absolute superhero. 🩺🐴
• My incredible mom and my daughter, Avery, who stepped up as the ultimate super grooms this weekend when I couldn't do it alone. 👩‍👧‍👧❤️
• My incredibly supportive husband at home, holding down the fort so I can chase these dreams.
I truly could not do any of this without every single one of you. Larry is getting all the love and carrots tonight! 🥕✨

We also want to extend a special, heartfelt thank you to Lauren Rietveld and Cassie Paula of Oxford Sporthorses! ❤️ At the very beginning of the season, they stepped in and selflessly helped us navigate the show scene when we were just getting our bearings. We truly will never forget your kindness and guidance! 🙏🐴

We also want to extend a massive thank you to Angelstone Tournaments for hosting such an incredible first season for us! 🏟️✨ The facility, the atmosphere, and the management made our very first year with you unforgettable.
We are already dreaming big and can't wait to see what the 2027 season has in store for Amarosa Farm! 🙌🐴

New home found ♥️
Congratulations to new owners we wish you much success
Available for your consideration: MBF Longhaul "Ice" 2022 16h Irish Sport Horse Gelding
He has one of the best brains we’ve had on a young horse—brave, sensible, uncomplicated, and just genuinely loves life and having a job. He is incredibly amateur friendly while still having all the talent and scope for someone who wants to keep developing a serious horse.

And for only being 4, he already has some pretty impressive experience. Since being imported from Ireland, Ice has competed at two Beginner Novice starter trials with clean cross-country rounds, competed clear in a 4-Year-Old YEH, and has been out schooling off property, confidently jumping around .80m courses. He takes new venues and new questions completely in stride—the same horse away from home that he is at home.

Cross country might be his favorite thing in the world. He loves to hack, will happily lead the group, and is the type you could hack out for days. He has been all over Windurra—the track, XC fields, show jumping ring with flags flapping—and very little seems to register as something worth worrying about. He is naturally brave without being strong or silly.

On the flat, Ice is a super cute mover with an easy, attractive way of going. Over fences, he has plenty of scope to continue moving up as an eventer or jumper, while also having that cute hunter style that could take him in that direction. He is truly an all-around prospect with a fresh slate to finish however you want.

Ice is barefoot, an easy keeper, and currently requires no maintenance. He is just as happy living out 24/7 as he is coming into a stall. He currently turns out with another gelding and has also lived in a herd and turned out solo.

This is the kind of young horse that is hard to find—the brain for an amateur, proven mileage beyond what you’d expect from a 4-year-old, the bravery you want in a sport horse, and enough talent that you aren’t going to outgrow him as your goals develop.
