✨VA spotlight - Rachel and Jen✨

What would a veterinary clinic be without veterinary assistants? They play so many important roles here at Big Creek and we are so grateful for them.

Rachel has been a big part of the Big Creek team for many years. Her favourite part of the job is radiology.

In her personal life she enjoys adventures with her husband and two young children.

Thank you for being such a hard worker Rachel!

Jen enjoys helping out wherever she is needed, whether it's helping out with a pet in the back of the clinic or lending a hand at the front desk.

Outside of work, Jen is always looking for something outdoorsy to do with her three dogs.

We appreciate you Jen!

This was a very hard decision, but we have chosen 4 dogs to be voted on for our Halloween costume contest! We will post each of their photos in the comments and all you have to do is 'like' your favourite costume.

The last day to vote will be Tuesday the 27th and we will announce the winner on Wednesday the 28th.

Amber is our newest veterinary technician, having finished school earlier this year.

What does Amber enjoy most about her job? She loves the nursing aspect of it and being able to care for your pets.

At home, Amber enjoys watching the deer in her backyard and baking bread.

Meet Meghan! The part of being a veterinary technician that she enjoys the most is how rewarding it is.

Other than being a technician, she enjoys snowboarding when the weather allows but is otherwise quite a homebody.

You just got a new puppy or kitten - what now?

Adding a new furry friend to your family is a very exciting time! It is also the perfect time to start preparing them for socializing as well as veterinary and grooming appointments.

Here are some tips to help keep your new pet confident as they grow:

1. Once they have received their final core vaccinations at 16 weeks of age or older, wait two weeks before taking them on neighbourhood walks. Walks can help desensitize them to different sounds, scents and movements.

2. Safely socialize them with other pets and people. If you know someone with another dog or cat who is friendly, this is a great way to get your pet used to sharing their space and being around others. You can also invite a friend over to provide positive play with your pet.

3. Get them used to being examined - try to focus especially on touching their paws and gently opening their mouths.

4. If you have a pet that requires regular grooming, start when they’re young. This helps them remain calm during appointments because they’re already used to the noises and sensations of a grooming salon.

5. Trim their nails regularly so they don’t get overly excited or anxious for future nail trims.

We are so excited to share that we will be hosting another donor clinic with the Canadian Animal Blood Bank at the end of November!

If you or someone you know has a dog who meets the requirements to be a blood donor, don't hesitate to ask for more information. You can help save the life of another dog.

We are so thankful for our veterinary technicians. We couldn’t do what we do without them.

Today we’d like to re-introduce Meghan.

Meghan’s favourite part of being a technician is anesthesia monitoring and pain management.

When she’s not working, Meghan enjoys reading and spending time with her family and their dog Cricket.
