Today’s “Why We Got the Dog” is: Garth!

From biting his own sister’s tail off as a puppy to killing porcupines; this dog is built a little different.

The king of boundaries and keeping order, handsome as all heck, and DGAF about what humans have to say….unless it’s “go get your dish!”

Surprisingly enough he has this soft side when he plays with Tilly and a goofy side with us. Packs “his baby” around but doesn’t find me funny when I tell him it should be in kindergarten by now.

He’s so instinctual, and I’ve studied him for years, that my brain is now wired to think WWGD? when working with clients.

It’s been 7 years straight so far of learning from this dog, and I hope I get a few more. There’s many dogs I meet who are leading but are terrible leaders. Garth? He was a born leader and it’s a privilege for my dog-nerd-brain to watch.

I’m doing a new series on here where I share why we got the dog we have, the reality of having it, and what we didn’t see coming!

Every single one of us gets a dog for a reason (or 3) and I think it’s good to be honest about how that relationship is playing out.

We can have a plan or an idea of how we think it’ll go but life keeps life-ing and the reality can be very different.

We start with Tilly, the best little terrier around; and we’ll end the series with Bernice aka Doofy: enough brain to function but with a heart overflowing.

🎄 Pick the breed that fits your lifestyle - there’s about 450 to choose from, nevermind the mixes of them…
🎄 Refereeing kids and puppies are part of the experience.
🎄 An 8 week old puppy is very different than a 6 month old puppy, but you’ll survive the teenage time just fine.
🎄 Puppies are very good at entertaining themselves so if they’re “bad” come spring; you gotta step up your game.

If you’re sitting there going: wtf I don’t know how to do any of that?? Hi. I sure do.

If you’re one of the lucky ones who has a “Bernice” that beefs with no one, submits to a dog over literally everything, enjoy your unicorn!

Many dogs though don’t have that demeanour and when they act like well, dogs, we think there’s something wrong with them.

You can also swap all that out for people - like your dog may love other dogs but people are the thing they feel triggered by.

Either way, it’s your dog’s current response to these things, and none of it is uncommon.

I’m not saying it’s welcomed or easy to manage - I’m just pointing out that your dog has genetics, personality, and 8ish weeks at a breeder/rescue under their belt that play a huge role in what you’re dealing with today.

The social media version of advice I can give is: manage your dog’s greetings the best you can by keeping the investigative sniffing short and then learning to just coexist in the space together.

That’s the start of building trust.
