Adoption Update: Eddie

"I'm finally ready to send you an update on Eddie, who we adopted in May 2025.

Eddie initially struggled settling into our family, but now that he has settled in, he's a very sweet, well-behaved boy. He has learned to be gentle with his paws and teeth. He loves to snuggle with his favourite people. He loves to play all day with anyone who is willing. He loves nose boops.

I regularly take him on walks in his tiger print harness and he flirts with every stranger, while they tell him how pretty, friendly, and well-behaved he is. He likes to sit in the window and have the people passing by admire him while he attempts to flirt with them through the window. He enjoys his castle on the living room ceiling, especially during his daily treat treasure hunts.

We've tried to spoil him with some safe human foods, but he only wants his cat food and cat treats, he has simple tastes. I think he's living his best life."

We’re so excited to announce that our Low Cost Spay Neuter program is now available for dogs, in partnership with Vetcetera Animal Hospital! 🐾

For years, our Low Cost Spay Neuter Program has helped thousands of cats and their owners throughout HRM by providing an affordable way to prevent accidental litters and help reduce pet overpopulation.

We’ve heard your feedback - and we wanted to make responsible pet ownership more accessible for dogs, too. ❤️

Through this new program, eligible owners can access affordable spay and neuter surgeries for their dogs, helping families provide essential care while preventing unwanted litters.

Because spaying and neutering isn’t just about preventing puppies - it’s an important part of responsible pet ownership and building a healthier community for animals.

Litter Needed! 📢

Our Pet Food Pantry is in high demand right now, and we’re sad to say that our litter supply has been completely emptied. 💔

This community-based program helps people and their pets stay together during financial hardship, because we believe you shouldn’t have to face those challenges alone.

Meet Night Owl – our elusive kitty who is finally getting the help he needs.

After being reported to a local trapper for weeks on end, this stray cat who would only appear under the cover of darkness was finally caught and brought into our care. It wasn’t an easy task. The trapper watched trail cameras, learned his behaviour patterns, and patiently waited for the opportunity to safely catch him.

Once trapped, it was immediately clear that Night Owl needed help.

He was covered in sores, has cauliflower ears that leave him prone to infection, and had clearly spent a long time simply trying to survive on his own. Most concerning, however, were the injuries to his torso and legs. It appears Night Owl may have had a close encounter with a much larger predator - and lived to tell the tale.

Now safe at Bide Awhile, Night Owl can finally begin healing. But after everything he’s been through, he has a long road ahead.

Adoption Update: Celery (Now Mongo)

"Mongo settled in instantly, claiming this as his place (he owns this place not us). He is a crazy little man! If he’s not attacking your feet, he’s at his toy bucket.

He loves everyone, but only chooses to be loved for about five minutes before getting the zoomies! He loves to have snuggle time with his mom in bed everyday (I think we have more naps than anything). Although, he hasn’t come fully around to his dad - unless it involves food. He also has a new favorite toy, which is his Toy Story one.

I would like to thank you all for bringing us to our crazy little man!"

Every year on August 28, we take time to remember our four-legged friends who made a significant impact on our lives but are no longer with us. ❤️

Known as Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, this annual day is a chance to honour the pets we’ve loved, remember the memories we shared, and recognize the special place they continue to hold in our hearts.

At Bide Awhile, you can find our very own physical Rainbow Bridge, created in honour of all the pets who have called our shelter a temporary home.

It’s a place where you can memorialize your beloved companion - whether they came to you through Bide Awhile or not. You can add their collar to the bridge and take a moment to remember the love and joy they brought into your life.

Because while they may no longer be by our side, the love we shared never leaves us.

This Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, we remember them all. 🌈❤️

Barrington Street Atlantic Superstore helped us celebrate International Cat Day a few weeks ago with a donation of cat food for the Pet Food Pantry… and now they’ve done it again for International Dog Day with a donation of dog food! 🐶

Our Pet Food Pantry is completely community funded and supplied - community members and businesses like Atlantic Superstore help us keep shelves stocked for animals and families in need. Thank you to all who make this important program possible! ❤️
