🐰✨ Exotics Procedure Spotlight ✨ 🐰

Rabbits that undergo general anesthesia can be safely intubated with an endotracheal tube with the endoscope-guided technique, as demonstrated here by our Exotics technician Brittany.

Rabbit intubation is challenging due to their narrow mouth opening and long soft palate. Blind intubation in these species can be attempted, but does not allow for examination of the oropharynx and can lead to accidental tracheal foreign bodies (hay). Endoscopy-assisted intubation is the safest option for rabbits and rodents to secure their airways for general anesthesia.

This female rabbit was safely anesthetized for her ovariohysterectomy surgery (spay) as a way to prevent any future uterine disease and unwanted litters.

Meet sweet Jock!

Jock presented to the Emergency Department due to dyspnea (difficulty breathing). Jock was hospitalized and fluid was removed from his chest. To determine the cause of his pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs)

Jock visited our radiology team for a CT and then fine needle aspirate of a mass found in his chest. The sample collected from his mass was sent off for interpretation and sadly came back as Lymphoma.

Although it is difficult to receive a cancer diagnosis, there are treatment options for Lymphoma which typically carry a good prognosis.

Jock’s parents discussed the options available with the Internal Medicine team and started the CHOP protocol. This protocol is completed over 19 weeks involving the administration of three different chemotherapy drugs.

Jock was a wonderful patient and we are so proud to say he is in remission!

Mr. Bing visited our emergency department over Christmas due to a condition known as Septic Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis. He presented to us after repeated vomiting and episodes of diarrhea with blood.

This poor little guy was in a rough spot when he arrived to Maritime, requiring a central line placement, blood transfusions, and multiple constant rate infusions, or CRIs, of medications to help stabilize him. He needed to stay 3 days in clinic before he finally turned the corner and was able to return home in time for New Years.

Thanks to Trupanion, Chandler's owners were able to focus on what mattered most: his care and recovery. Trupanion covered their portion of his eligible veterinary expenses, helping make the treatment process smoother and allowing Chandler's family to make decisions with greater peace of mind.

Chandler Bing is continuing to do well at home, and his family is incredibly grateful for the care he received from our emergency team. They're also thankful for the support Trupanion provided, helping them focus on Chandler's recovery every step of the way.

📷 by : Meet Salvator Lorenzo (“Sal”), a handsome 4-year-old Poodle mix who came to us with severe neck pain.

An MRI of Sal's cervical spine revealed an intervertebral disc herniation causing spinal cord compression at the C2–C3 level. To relieve the pressure on his spinal cord, our team recommended surgical decompression using a ventral slot procedure.

We're thrilled to share that Sal's surgery went very well! 💙 He is already feeling more comfortable and is on his way home to Fredericton to continue his recovery with his family.

We wish you a smooth recovery, Sal—we can't wait to hear how you're doing! 🐾
