L'histoire de l'Akita américain est intimement liée à la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Durant le conflit, les Akitas du Japon ont frôlé l'extinction, nombre d'entre eux ayant été confisqués ou perdus en raison des épreuves de la guerre. Pour sauver la race, certains furent croisés avec des Bergers allemands. Après la guerre, des militaires américains, séduits par ces chiens puissants et loyaux, en ramenèrent un grand nombre aux États-Unis. Ces chiens sont à l'origine de ce que nous connaissons aujourd'hui sous le nom d'Akita américain : un gardien intrépide, un compagnon de famille dévoué et un symbole de courage et de résilience.

To save the breed, some were crossed with German Shepherds. After the war, American servicemen, captivated by these powerful and loyal dogs, brought many of them back to the United States.
