RABIES INFORMATION FOR OUR COMMUNITY

You may have seen recent updates from local veterinary clinics and other organizations regarding rabies-positive bats on Vancouver Island and elsewhere in BC, along with resources being shared within our community.

We wanted to provide some practical information on what to do should you or your pet have contact with a bat, as well as local resources for further guidance.

IF YOUR PET HAS CONTACT WITH A BAT:

• Prevent any further contact with the bat and keep other pets and people away.

• Do not handle a live or dead bat with bare hands.

• Contact your veterinary clinic promptly. Recommendations following a potential exposure will depend on the circumstances of the encounter and your pet’s current rabies vaccination status.

• If it is safe to do so, avoid disposing of or damaging the bat until you have received further guidance, as rabies testing may be recommended.

IF A PERSON HAS HAD CONTACT WITH A BAT:

Contact Public Health promptly for assessment and guidance following a potential exposure.
