Does your dog come running when you callโ€”or do they seem to have selective hearing? Teaching a reliable recall is essential for keeping them safe and giving them more freedom. Whether youโ€™re starting with a puppy or working with an older dog, hereโ€™s how to make โ€œcomeโ€ their favorite cue!

๐ŸŒŸ Distractions and Skill Level: Exciting sights, smells, and sounds can capture your dogโ€™s attention and make it hard for them to shift their focus back to you. Even in familiar spaces, like your neighborhood park, the level of distractions might be more than your dog is ready to handle just yet. Every dog progresses at their own pace, so take your time and adjust the environment as needed.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Low-Value Rewards: The world is an exciting place full of sights and smells that can easily compete for your dogโ€™s attention. If your reward isnโ€™t exciting or valuable enough, it wonโ€™t help build a strong recall. High-value treats or toys are key to keeping your dog motivated to come when called.

๐Ÿƒ Negative or Mixed Associations: If โ€œcomeโ€ always means the end of fun (like leaving the park) or something unpleasant (like a bath), your dog may hesitate to respond.

๐Ÿ– Reward Generously and Make It Worthwhile: Use high-value treats like cheese, chicken, or liverโ€”something your dog finds irresistible. For toy-obsessed dogs, tug or fetch can work too. Be generousโ€”recall is a potentially life-saving skill, and every success deserves a big payout.

๐Ÿก Start Small and Build Gradually: Begin in low-distraction environments like indoors or your backyard. As your dog succeeds, gradually progress to slightly more challenging spaces, such as a quiet park. Keep the distractions manageable and adjust at your dogโ€™s pace.

๐Ÿƒ Make It Fun and Engaging: Turn recall into a game! Use an excited tone, run away to encourage them to chase you, and reward when they catch up. Adding an element of play keeps your dog engaged and makes coming to you exciting.

๐Ÿง Be Selective When You Call: Avoid overusing the recall cue. If youโ€™re not confident your dog will respond, donโ€™t call them.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Use a Long Line for Safety: A long leash (15-30 feet) allows your dog to move around and explore while keeping them safe. Itโ€™s a great way to practice recall from a bit of a distance, giving your dog the opportunity to practice coming back to you without the risk of them running off.

โŒ Keep It Positive: Never call your dog for things they dislike, like nail trims or baths. Instead, go to them for those tasks. This helps keep the recall cue linked to rewarding and positive experiences.

๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜† ๐—œ๐˜€ ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐˜†

Building a reliable recall takes patience, practice, and plenty of rewards. Keep training sessions short, fun, and consistent. Over time, your dog will see coming to you as the best choice they can make!

๐ŸพTrainerโ€™s Tips: Understanding and Managing Puppy Biting ๐Ÿพ

Does it feel like you're living with a tiny land shark? While puppy biting is a normal part of development, understanding and managing it effectively can prevent frustration and strengthen your bond during their early months. Hereโ€™s an in-depth look at why puppies bite and what you can do to guide them towards better behavior:

Why Puppies Bite:

๐ŸŒŽ Exploration: Puppies are naturally curious and explore their world by mouthing.
๐Ÿฆท Teething: Teething can cause discomfort, making biting more frequent as they seek relief.
๐ŸŽฎ Play: Biting is often a way for puppies to initiate play with their siblings or humans.
๐Ÿ• Breed Traits: Herding breeds may nip as part of their herding instinct; retrievers often grab anything within reach due to their natural retrieving tendencies.

Effective Strategies to Manage Puppy Biting:

๐Ÿพ Meeting Their Needs: Ensure all of your puppyโ€™s fundamental needs are met as unmet needs can lead to increased biting:

Physical Exercise: Regular and engaging play sessions, walks that allow your puppy to explore and sniff, and safe interactions at puppy socials can help expend their energy.

Mental Stimulation: Incorporate training sessions throughout the day, use interactive toys, and games like "find it" with treats to keep their minds active and focused.

Chewing Outlets: Provide a variety of chewable toys and rotate them to maintain interest. Toys like durable rubber toys, safe edible chews, and puzzle feeders can fulfill their chewing needs effectively.

๐Ÿ’ค Manage Sleep & Rest: Puppies often bite more when they are overtired. Ensuring your puppy has regular naps throughout the day can help mitigate biting induced by fatigue. A comfortable, quiet sleeping area encourages them to settle down and rest, reducing overtired nipping.

๐Ÿ”„ Redirect Biting: When your puppy starts biting, introduce a novel toy to keep their interest and redirect their biting instinct from your hands or clothes to the toy. Consistency in redirection not only diverts their attention but also teaches them that it's appropriate to play with their toys, not by biting your hands or clothes.

๐Ÿšช Remove Yourself, if Needed: If the biting continues despite redirection, calmly remove yourself from the situation for several seconds. This temporary withdrawal of attention reinforces that biting results in the end of interaction and fun. Step over a baby gate or into another room, then return after a short pause to try interacting again.

๐Ÿšซ What NOT to Do:

No Physical Punishments: Avoid yelling, hitting, or intimidating your puppy, as these methods can increase anxiety and aggression, making biting worse.

Avoid โ€˜Yelpingโ€™: Although once recommended, yelping like a hurt puppy can actually excite your puppy or scare them, potentially increasing biting behavior.

โณ Be Patient: Overcoming puppy biting is a gradual process that can take weeks or even months. Consistent, gentle guidance, combined with meeting their physical, mental, and chewing needs, teaches them how to interact appropriately without fostering fear or aggression.

Dog training is a journey, not a race, and progress is never linear. There will be good days and challenging onesโ€”and thatโ€™s okay. Dogs, like people, learn at their own pace, shaped by factors like their age (like during adolescence, when their brains are still developing), environment, stress, and daily experiences.

Remember, you and your dog are a team. Every interaction, even the challenging ones, is a chance to build trust and deepen your bond. Progress doesnโ€™t mean perfection, and setbacks donโ€™t mean failure.

Just because your dog has practiced something many times in the past doesnโ€™t mean theyโ€™ll get it right every time, especially under stress or in an unfamiliar environment. Think about how often we forget things when weโ€™re overwhelmed, distracted, or in a completely new situationโ€”itโ€™s no different for dogs.

Some days, your dog might be calm, focused, and responding to your cues well; other days, it can feel like youโ€™ve taken several steps back. Thatโ€™s part of the process. With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, you and your dog will keep moving forwardโ€”even if the path has some detours.

Celebrate the small wins and trust the process. Progress, not perfection, always. Be patient with your dogโ€™s growth, and donโ€™t forget to be kind to yourself too. Youโ€™re in this together. ๐Ÿพ

Whatโ€™s one small win or breakthrough youโ€™ve had with your dog recently? Letโ€™s celebrate the progress togetherโ€”share below! ๐Ÿ‘‡โœจ

Milo and Kona want to wish everyone a ! ๐ŸŽƒ
ย
Halloween night, with all the noise, strangers in costumes and activity at the door can be overwhelming for even the most confident and well-adjusted dogs but is especially challenging for dogs who are fearful of strangers and loud noises. Many dogs will become overly stressed out and anxious by the constant knocking and doorbell ringing. It is important that we set our dogs up for success and aim to keep them feeling safe and comfortable.

Tips to make Halloween less scary for your dog:

๐Ÿ‘ป The first step in preparing your dog for a relaxed Halloween evening is to exercise him earlier in the day. Be sure your pup gets plenty of healthy movement in any dog-friendly activity, such as walking, running, hiking, or playing.

๐ŸŽƒ Before the trick-or-treating starts, set your dog up in a quiet room far away from the front door to help them stay calm and comfortable.

๐Ÿง›๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ Close blinds and turn on a white noise machine, fan, or background music in the room with your dog and turn the volume up to a level that will help drown out outside noise.

๐Ÿฆ‡ Provide your dog with interactive activities to keep them occupied and entertained such as a stuffed and frozen Kong, a bully stick, snuffle mat or dog puzzles with treats or kibble.

๐Ÿ‘ป Minimize noise and activity at the door by sitting outside or at the end of your driveway and handing out candy from there to keep trick-or-treaters from approaching your house, knocking on the door, or ringing the bell.

๐ŸŽƒ Even if you are just having friends over for a Halloween party, keep your dogs away from the festivities in their safe room. Masks and costumes change how people look and smell to a dog, so even familiar people may become frightening. Put a sign on the door to the safe room so your guests know itโ€™s off-limits.

๐Ÿง›๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ Remember it's okay to comfort your dog if they're upset. You can't reinforce fear (it's an emotion, not a behaviour) so please comfort them if that reassures them.

๐Ÿฆ‡ Ensure your dog is wearing a collar with a legible I.D dog.

10/06/2022

Our dogs have layered needs, ranging from food, water, and other necessities needed by any living creature to more complex requirements, such as physical exercise, mental stimulation, and the ability to engage in natural, instinctual behaviour.

The practice of satisfying these complex needs โ€” especially the ones involving your dogโ€™s mental and emotional well-being โ€” is termed canine enrichment. Essentially, means providing dogs with regular opportunities to engage in a full range of natural species-specific behaviors in safe, appropriate, and fun ways. Enrichment provides dogs with the mental, social, and sensory stimulation they need for optimal well-being.

Think of all the things your dog likes to do โ€“ sniffing, scavenging, chasing, digging, ripping, shredding, chewing, licking, just to name a few. All these behaviors are so fun and satisfying for dogs because they are natural to their species. Engaging in these behaviors on a regular basis is not only normal, but essential to their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Enrichment is not defined solely by what we do, but more significantly by the outcomes of what we do. It can only be enrichment if the result is a physically and behaviorally healthy animal.

Dogs suffering from separation anxiety have a phobia of being alone. They display signs of fear and panic when left for longer than they can handle.

What are the common signs of separation anxietyโ“

The signs that we look for when deciding if a dog has separation anxiety include:

๐Ÿ”ธ Excessive barking, whining, crying and howling.
๐Ÿ”ธ Chewing or destroying floors, walls, and doors, particularly around entrances.
๐Ÿ”ธ Frantic attempts to escape, sometimes to the point of self harm.
๐Ÿ”ธ Soiling (especially when the dog is otherwise house-trained).
๐Ÿ”ธ Getting anxious well before you leave.
๐Ÿ”ธ Disinterest in food (i.e will not eat the stuffed Kong you left for them).

Dogs do not need to display all of these behaviours to be diagnosed with separation anxiety, in fact they may only display one or two.

Some anxious dogs donโ€™t display any of the more common separation-related behaviours but instead show some of the other signs of fear such as:

๐Ÿ”ธ Licking
๐Ÿ”ธ Panting
๐Ÿ”ธ Whining, low-level crying
๐Ÿ”ธ Pacing
๐Ÿ”ธ Trembling
๐Ÿ”ธ Tail tucked
๐Ÿ”ธ Drooling
๐Ÿ”ธ Freezing
๐Ÿ”ธ Cowering
๐Ÿ”ธ Ears pinned back
