A successful first day at camp is all about first impressions, because that sets the tone for what a dog expects it to be, especially how they're going to be treated by the other dogs. And how they can also treat the other dogs The first day is the best day to create good associations. If a dog's first interaction with the dogs is excitement and being allowed to invade space right away that will be their association with day camp, but the association I like to create is calmness.

No matter what issue your dog is having, no matter what you believe is behind it, it all comes back to us. If we can't become more disciplined, more structured, and more patient, we'll never be worth following. Our dogs can only trust the leadership we're willing to earn. (Treats will never earn it) That starts with the work we do on ourselves.

Here's what I look for. Loose bodies. Tails wagging, but not just any wag. I want a slow, wide, loose sweep. A stiff, short, quick back and forth is a different message. When play is going well, it almost looks like one dog is playing in front of a mirror. Their energy syncs up and so does their body language. And no, growling doesn't automatically mean it's bad.

Here's when it's going south. One dog is way more amped than the other. One dog stops playing and goes stiff. Or you see avoidance, which is a dog trying to walk away. Then there's a different kind of warning: side eye and lip licking. Those are stress signals, and they mean a dog is uncomfortable even if it's still in the game.

Your job is to control the play before it gets there. Even when two dogs are playing great, the energy keeps climbing, and eventually someone gets too high and a fight breaks out or one dog gets corrected way too hard. So break it up while it's still fun.

Having her stay with me was a blast. She walked into a brand new place and made herself at home like she'd always belonged, and she got along with every dog in the pack.
