PUPPIES
If you have a new puppy it’s so important to take advantage of this introductory package, while they’re still young and impressionable.
We offer this to puppies starting at 12 weeks of age, and up to 5 months. Ensure your puppy has had at least two sets of vaccines prior.
Starting your puppy at this young age is pivotal. We do everything we can to give them a calm and pleasant experience while they are still in an easy, mouldable, trusting stage of development.
They’ll have a head to toe scrub in the bath (learning to accept low-pressure water spraying around your face is a big deal!), then a warm towel wrap and maybe a little snuggle.
Then the dreaded velocity dryer. It’s loud, so we use happy hoodies to protect their ears to muffle the sound. We dry them slowly with the air pressure on the lowest variable setting. The key is to introduce these scary experiences, but in the gentlest way possible.
Then another snuggle and a treat.
Then we move to the grooming table. Puppies need to learn to stand confidently on a grooming table, and to accept our hands and tools on them.
We brush them out, trim their toenails and clean their ears. We teach them to accept clippers and scissors with a sanitary trim. We clip the pads of their feet and shape their paws. Clip under their tail and their groin area. Then we clip or scissor in front of their eyes and trim their bangs back.
For most socialized adult dogs (with a confident, trained groomer) this is no big deal. For a puppy this stuff can be scary!
Puppies have short attention spans and tire quickly, so we don’t put them through the time it would take to do a full body haircut. So like Poppy, they’ll still be fuzzy and won’t have a perfect show trim, but the experience and positive impression we give them is what’s important at this stage.
From the bath tub to table time this process probably takes 30-40 minutes, but we budget about 1.5 hours for these appointments. So that your puppy gets to know us and the surroundings, and to ensure there is time for praise and rewards in between each step.
Between 6-12 months puppies go through a teenage fear stage. It’s a natural stage of development where they are simply less trusting and a little fearful. Coincidentally, they are now also going through coat change which makes their coats much more difficult to manage and matting quickly becomes a problem. So if you’ve waited to have your fluffy puppy groomed until they’re 8 months old, without having introduced them to professional grooming with our puppy packages, it’s probably going to be difficult for everyone. A scared teenage dog who likely has some uncomfortable matting is going to take extra time to ease their fears and groom them safely. And of course, time is money!
So please, do your puppy a favour (and your groomer and your wallet 😜) and take advantage of these inexpensive puppy packages and set your puppy up for a lifetime of happy experiences!
