Forget the red carpet… Picasso is making a statement on the grey carpet! 😄

After his neuter surgery, Picasso was sporting one of our post operative recovery shirts. Not only are they stylish, but they help protect the incision site, reduce licking, and support a smooth healing process without the need for the traditional cone in many pets.

We think he wears it pretty well. ❤️

Recovery shirts are available through Collingwood Veterinary Services and can be a comfortable option for many pets after surgery.

Proof that not all patients mind diagnostic testing… especially when snacks are involved! 😹

This precious patient discovered that our imaging trough doubles as a pretty comfortable lounge chair when treats are on the menu. Our team always strives to make diagnostic procedures as calm, comfortable, and positive as possible for every patient.

But all that swimming can come with a downside… we see a lot more ear infections this time of year. Moisture gets trapped in the ears, creating the perfect environment for irritation and infection.

💡 Pro tip: Gently dry your pet’s ears after swimming and watch for signs like head shaking, scratching, or a bad smell.

☀️ Hot Pavement Alert! As the weather warms up, our furry friends’ paws are at risk on hot sidewalks and asphalt.

A simple way to check? Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5–7 seconds, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them! 🐾

This post contains images from a recent emergency pyometra surgery performed by Dr. Laura at our sister clinic, Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital.

Pyometra is a life-threatening uterine infection that most commonly occurs in unspayed female dogs and cats. It develops when hormonal changes after a heat cycle allow bacteria to grow inside the uterus, leading to a serious and rapidly progressing infection.

🚨 Signs of pyometra can include:
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Increased thirst and urination
• Swollen or painful abdomen
• Vaginal discharge (may not always be present)
• Fever or sudden collapse in severe cases

Pyometra is a true veterinary emergency and can become fatal very quickly without immediate surgical treatment.

The most effective prevention is spaying (ovariohysterectomy). Spaying removes the uterus and ovaries, completely eliminating the risk of pyometra, and also provides important long-term health benefits such as reducing the risk of mammary tumours and preventing unwanted pregnancies.

While emergency surgery can be life-saving, prevention through routine spaying is always safest.

🌞 Happy June! Did you know June is National Pet Preparedness Month? 🐾

Just like we plan for emergencies, our pets need a plan too! Having an emergency kit ready keeps your furry friends safe and gives you peace of mind. ❤️

Essentials for Your Pet Emergency Kit 🐾
1. Food & Water
- At least 3–7 days’ worth of food (dry or canned)
- Bottled water or water for 3–7 days
- Bowls (collapsible or lightweight)
2. Medications & Health Needs
- Any prescription medications your pet takes
- Copies of vaccination records, medical history, microchip info
- First-aid kit (bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, etc.)
- Flea/tick prevention or supplements, if needed
3. Comfort & Safety
- Leash, harness, and collar with ID tags
- Carrier or crate for safe transport
- Favorite blanket, bed, or toy for comfort
- Muzzle (if your pet is anxious or scared in emergencies)
4. Hygiene & Clean-Up
- Litter, litter box, or pads for cats
- P**p bags or disposable gloves for clean-up
- Towels or pet wipes
5. Emergency Info & Supplies
- Contact list: veterinarian, local emergency clinic, friends/family
- Recent photo of your pet (for identification if lost)
- Flashlight and batteries
- Emergency contact card in carrier or kit
6. Optional Extras
- Extra collar or leash
- Pet-safe calming aids (pheromone sprays, calming treats)
- Travel food scoop or measuring cup

Tip: Keep the kit in an easy-to-grab container and check it every 6 months to make sure food, water, and medications are up to date.
