MYSTERY SOLVED: It’s time to reveal who the ghosts in the back seat were in the photo we shared on Sunday!

Surprise! The ghosts were 2 members of our animal care team, Jess and Sophia, plus *drumroll* Freddy!

Please help us welcome Freddy to LP!

Freddy was making headlines in local Fredericton groups for being a goose on the loose near a busy off-ramp.

People had been spotting Freddy for days, hanging out and getting dangerously close to the road as cars zoomed by.

In the picture we posted on Sunday, Jess and Sophia were checking in on how Freddy was doing during her freedom ride. Thank you to Kate for taking this picture while I drove everyone back to the sanctuary!

Freddy was a great passenger and seemed quite content to lie on a pile of blankets between Jess and Sophia. Once we got back to the sanctuary, we settled Freddy into our quarantine area and checked for anything that needed immediate attention.

Freddy seems to be in good health so far, except for one of her legs. We’re keeping an eye on that leg, as there might be an old injury there or perhaps we’re seeing the result of inadequate nutrition when she was younger.

You may have noticed how small Freddy is for a goose. Some folks speculate that she was a duck because of her size; however, Freddy is indeed a goose.

Breed, nutrition, and early care can all affect growth, but based on what we know right now, she is likely a juvenile goose, probably around 3–4 months old.

As we track her weight over the next little while, we’ll get a better idea of her age and such.

In the meantime, please welcome Freddy to Lily’s Place!

Jess is back with us for part of the summer, and Merlin couldn't be happier!

You may have already read some of Jessica's communications, gotten a phone call from her, or spotted her in pictures! Jess is fabulous with the animals, providing exceptional care, and is great with people, too!

Several folks saw Jess out in Fredericton over the weekend, along with Sophia (the other half of our dynamic summer duo!), who caught and escorted our newest resident back to the sanctuary for a health check.

Having a fabulous team for the animals is possible thanks to our network of donors, including The Grinning Goat Vegan Boutique, who just renewed their annual business sponsorship!

Thank you to everyone who's a part of creating a safe place for animals like Merlin to meet and be cared for by folks like Jess!

We're feeling so supported by The Animal & Vegan Advocacy Summit!

Any of the amazing organizations represented at the summit could have been chosen to receive a donation, but AVA picked Lily's Place Animal Sanctuary as the local sanctuary recipient for their AVA Canada 🇨🇦 summit!

We're beyond grateful for all the support AVA and AVA attendees have shown our small but mighty sanctuary!

4 members of our leadership team attended The Animal & Vegan Advocacy Summit last weekend.

Left to right:
Tim Clancy (co-founder and president), Jamie Sabot - that’s me 😄 (co-founder and executive director), Sarah Sinacore (board chair and education specialist), and Sam Baker (human resource manager).

We’re still exhausted, but it was well worth it to be in Toronto alongside nearly 900 other advocates who want to see a better world for farmed animals!

The goal of our attendance at the summit was to put the loss of provincial veterinary services before intelligent, connected, and solution-oriented professionals. We asked for advice, feedback, and solutions to our biggest question:

How does a sanctuary continue to operate in a capacity that reduces suffering and promotes compassionate care when the whole province is struggling to find vet care, particularly for emergencies?

We were able to chat with other sanctuary founders, executive directors, development (fundraising) teams, educators, grantors, “transFARMation” organizations (orgs that support and facilitate the transition from factory farms to crop farming), animal justice lawyers, people working in tech, lobbyists, and so many more amazing folks!

We walked away with a lot more tools in our toolkit for solving this problem for our organization, and potentially for other aligned organizations and individuals!

While it will be a lot of hard work (which is the only type we take on 😅) to bring things to fruition, I’m excited to see how things unfold as we do our follow ups and set a course for the next 6-12 months.

Gladys has come such a long way.

When she arrived near the end of spring last year, she was carrying the weight of devastating neglect. Everything was new, overwhelming, and uncertain - including us. She was very unsure about everything and everyone. It took her a while to even learn how to trust and enjoy time with the other duck residents. It was a big change to come from an environment where her mentality had to be “fend for myself” in order to just survive.

But look at her now.

Here she has been able to learn to depend on her fellow duck friends and build some trust with the humans that care for her. Because no duck should ever have to carry the fears she once did.

Gladys has slowly, gently opened up to sanctuary life. She’s made friends who stay close by her side, whether they’re scavenging through the grass, relaxing in the sunshine, or enjoying their pool together (Gladys prefers head dunks and splashing water onto her feathers while the others float around). And group nap time? She’s always there for it.

Watching her heal, physically and emotionally, has been one of the quiet joys of this past year. Every day she shows us a little more of her personality, a little more trust, a little more of who she is when she finally feels safe.

We’re so grateful to witness her journey

Heat waves call for extra care, which meant turkey spa day at Lily’s Place last week. Judas spent time helping our turkey friends cool off by gently dipping their feet into cold water; a simple little “turkey pedicure” that brings big relief. 😅

Daryl is in the wheel barrel and Bo is standing in the bucket!
