Unmasking the Hidden Discomfort of Our Feline Friends
đ± More Than Just an "Old Cat" đ±
We recently welcomed a sweet feline patient whose owner was concerned about sudden diarrhea and accidents outside the litter box after a period away from home. This former street cat, now enjoying a pampered indoor life, seemed to be struggling with stress-related digestive upset.
But as we talked, another, more subtle concern emerged. The cat wasn't jumping as much, and those cat tower adventures had decreased. Her owner wondered if it was "just old age." This led us to a conversation about feline arthritis, a condition often hidden by cats who are masters at masking pain. Many older cats suffer in silence, and sometimes, what looks like a behavioral issue (like missing the litter box) can actually be a sign of joint discomfort.
We discussed a newer, innovative monthly injection (Solensia) that can significantly improve comfort for arthritic cats, without the kidney concerns of older medications. Itâs incredible how much happier and more active these treatments can make our senior pets!
This visit was a beautiful reminder that our pets often communicate their needs in quiet ways. Paying attention to changes in their movement, habits, and even litter box use can help us uncover hidden discomfort and improve their quality of life.
