Our 6 year old mare Astuta came home for a vacation on September 7th. Thank you to Maria and her staff at Sweetgrass Stables, Balzac, for her wonderful care for the last 7 months. Astuta had been out for training since early September 2018. She did foundation work with renowned dressage trainer, Val Hellerud. Then she moved on to Laurie Pettifer and Thomas Kubili for work based on the Parelli method. This has meant that she has greater confidence; she can be ridden ba****ck, with a dressage saddle, in a treeless saddle and in a bitless bridle (her favourite). Astuta has done work with tarps and balls and flags and has been ridden down gravel roads. After her time off, Astuta will be ready for an owner to take her home as their forever horse. She also holds breeding papers from the Foundation PreMundial. New pictures and videos coming soon
In other happy news, while there are no new horse foals at our farm, we have a beautiful new grandson, born August 24 to Jess and Christian. Max Felix Von Ompteda is a charmer already.

Milagro Farms congratulates Laurie Pettifer on her purchase of Milagro Dictatorial (call name now is “Rico”). This is such a wonderful home for him. We look forward to seeing them in working equitation and doing Doma Vaquero exhibitions.
Laurie is continuing the education of Milagro Astuta at SweetGrass Stables Balzac, Alberta. Laurie is training for flexibility and courage. Astuta has been in training for some months with Val Hellerud and then a month with Kim Vos. At 6 years old, she is ready for great things for a loving owner.
Videos of Astuta at walk, trot and canter, taken On February 28, 2019 are available. Astuta is approved as a PRE (Pure Spanish) Andalusian breeding quality reproducer.

December 2018 news. Val Hellerud has moved Astuta to a lovely walk, trot and transition stage. Canter is coming soon. Astuta is doing very well at her first experience at a stable and fit right in. At 5 1/2 , she is 15.3+ and seems to still be growing a bit. She is a powerfully built mare with a nice walk and lovely trot. Her half brother, Dictatorial (called Rico by his trainer) is at the same stable under the wonderful care of Laurie Pettifer. He is having fun with Parelli type training. She sees him as a Doma Vaquera horse and Working Equitation for sure — maybe even work with cattle she says! Saddle work is coming up in the new year. Our three year old Regalo is just growing up at the farm. They all remain for sale. Merry Christmas from Milagro Farms.

Milagro is so honoured to once again have Val Hellerud working with our horses. She is do training with our lovely 5 year old mare, Astuta and our 5 year old bay gelding, Dictatorial. Val’s wonderful talents as a dressage trainer helped her take our beloved Estimado to reserve championships at the Provincial and Western Canada open dressage championships in the mid 1990’s. We have great hopes for these two young horses — no doubt they will learn great skills in Val’s capable hands.

Milagro Farms owners, Ken & Terry Hagel, spent 3 weeks in Spain this Fall. It was a wonderful trip after a 12 year hiatus! From Madrid to Toledo to Cordoba to Jerez, Malaga to Barcelona, and a final week in the lovely town of Aranjuez.

Ken & Terry also shared the wonder of a performance at the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, with daughter Jessica & son-in-law Christian.
And, yes, they saw Rafael Soto, Olympic competitor back when he rode Invasor, and now Riding Director of the Royal School. He rode a number of times during the performance, including demonstrating the ‘working cowhorse’ i.e Doma Vaquera.

Another horse moment: one fine September morning in Cordoba, we heard the unmistakable clop of horse shoes just outside our window. The rider was dressed in proper Doma Vaquero attire and riding a magnificent bay Andalusian - just out for a quiet Sunday ride around town.

We regret that we didn’t get to the Royal Stables in Cordoba - next time! For now, as winter arrives in Alberta, we have to settle for dreaming of Spain and making plans to go back — the sooner the better.

Congratulations to Kendra Martland!
Kendra is now the proud owner of 2 1/2 year old
Milagro Flamenco, now a big 16+ hh gelding.
Kendra is well known in horses circles as a young woman who has excelled in Working Equitation with her huge Andalusian/Percheron cross gelding, Montague.
Working Equitation lies in Flamenco’s future too, and he should be an athletic confident partner for Kendra. Kendra will also no doubt continue her professional equestrian education in dressage with trainer, Val Hellerud. This should be very rewarding with Flamenco’s natural ability. Some of this certainly comes from Flamenco’s sire, Comanche II, an ‘elite’ (calificado) stallion and a Gran Prix dressage competitor.
Thank you for your ongoing friendship and your confidence in our breeding program, Kendra! Our very best wishes for many years of fun with Flamenco.
