You’ve heard of a girl’s girl… well, I’m a business’s business. 😂🩷
Something that has always bothered me is seeing someone announce that they’re starting a new business, only for the comments to immediately turn into criticism of their pricing.
And it’s not that people aren’t allowed to have an opinion on price. We all have budgets. I get it.
What I think we sometimes forget is how much courage it takes to put yourself out there and start something of your own.
When I started The Cobourg Pet Nanny, I had to learn how to advocate for myself, stand behind my pricing and figure things out as I went.
And honestly? I didn’t fully understand all the costs that came with running a business.
Insurance. Gas. Vehicle wear and tear. Software. Supplies. Taxes. Administration. Travel time. Education. Client communication. The list goes on.
As my business grew and I understood those costs better, I had to increase my rates.
A huge part of that learning came from the incredible business owners I’ve had in my life—many of whom started as friends or clients. They challenged the way I viewed my business, helped me understand its true costs and taught me to value my time and expertise.
I’ve been incredibly lucky to have that mentorship, and it’s something I want to pay forward.
So when I see someone starting a business, I want to cheer them on.
Maybe their pricing will change. Maybe their business model will evolve. That’s part of building something.
If their service isn’t within your budget, that’s okay. “That’s not in my budget” is a perfectly valid response.
But there’s a difference between choosing not to buy something and making someone feel foolish for trying.
There is room for more great pet-care businesses in Northumberland County. I couldn’t possibly care for every pet who needs care, even if I wanted to!
So I’ll always cheer for the person brave enough to say:
“I’m going to try this.” 🩷🐾
Be a business’s business.
