Friday Facts! 🐾

As your cat ages, their testicles form and will gradually descend to their sc***um, the sac of skin designed to hold and protect them. This process of the testicles moving down into the sc***um occurs between 3 to 6 weeks of age.

Kittens that are neutered between the ages of 8 weeks to 6 months will have fewer postoperative complications due to the size and development of the reproductive organs.

Recovery times will be shorter, and cats will have a lower chance of displaying secondary hormone behaviors that occur around 5-6 months of age, such as:

Spraying

Marking

Attempting to escape for mating

Vocalizing

Fighting with others

Neuter is cuter! And every cat and kitten adopted from NHS comes fully vetted including day/neuter, vaccines,microchip,deflea, deworm!

Do you have professional experience working with animals and a passion for helping them?
The Northumberland Humane Society is looking for a dedicated, compassionate and hardworking Animal Care Attendant to join our team!

This is a hands-on position for someone who understands that animal care is more than loving their own pets — it requires professional experience, commitment, physical stamina and compassion.

🐶🐱 The successful candidate must:
Have previous professional animal care experience — experience caring for personal pets does not qualify
Hold a valid Ontario Class G driver's licence and have reliable transportation
Be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
Be comfortable working with dogs, cats and other animals of varying sizes, temperaments and needs
Have a genuine love and compassion for animals
Be comfortable handling animals safely and confidently
Be comfortable dealing with the public, including adopters, animal owners and community members
Have excellent communication and customer-service skills
Be physically capable of standing, walking, bending, lifting and performing cleaning duties throughout the day
Be comfortable working in a fast-paced shelter environment
Be able to work independently while also being a strong team player
Be dependable, responsible and able to follow established animal-care, safety and cleaning protocols
Be comfortable working with animals that may be fearful, stressed, sick or require additional care
Be willing to assist with cleaning kennels, feeding, medicating, enrichment, animal handling, laundry and general shelter duties
Be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as required
