Some of you know this, but my golden retriever Brie tends to be reactive around other dogs. She comes by this honestly as a retired breeding mill dog. I’m sure she had plenty of negative experiences with other dogs in her past. What I am noticing now is that she is walking by other dogs completely ignoring them going about her happy little business. Even when the other dog is barking or otherwise reacting towards her.  The game changer for her has been long line sniffy walks. message me if you’d like more information on this.

Warning – sensitive topic

Today we're going to talk about behavioural euthanasia.
This is the most heartbreaking and difficult decision that a dog guardian will probably ever have to make. Thankfully, the need for this drastic step is quite rare. There are some cases where our dogs ability to cope in society is severely impaired due to genetics, medical issues, or environmental experiences. Some dogs do not have the resilience to recover from some events and the long lasting effects on their mental health result in them living a life full of endless stress, fear and anxiety. Often these are the dogs who are unpredictable and lash out at strangers or even family members.
However, before making the decision to even consider behavioural euthanasia, there are a lot of questions that should be addressed and training options that should be explored thoroughly. The guardians of these dogs should seek guidance of a professional who has extensive training in dealing with extreme behaviour issues ( positive force free methods work better for a long-term success and rehabilitation.)

Thought for today.
Did you know that our puppies and dogs are sentient beings with their individual thoughts and personalities. Some are very biddable and easily trained for whatever it is we ask of them. Some are more “independent thinkers “. Either way training will require building a strong relationship and bond of trust with your dog. This requires a commitment  from us, their guardians. Please enter into your dog guardian role realizing that you will need to make a commitment of time and patience if your expectations are to have a well trained dog. There is no magic wand.
