Sharing this on behalf of our groomer at the kennel. While she attempts to keep her rates as low as possible, and is far lower than most groomers in our area, she still has "complaints" of the expense of the work she does. I feel like so many people don't appreciate the work, time and monitery investments it took for her to become the excellent groomer she is. And the same applies to our boarding facility. We are one of the lowest rates in the area and we attempt to keep our rates as affordable as possible, but the reality is, our expenses rise no differently than everyone else's.
🐾 LET’S TALK ABOUT THE REALITY OF THE GROOMING INDUSTRY. 🐾
I’ve spent many years in the grooming industry. I’ve owned several salons, worked behind the grooming table, invested in continuing education, and taught.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s this:
Groomers are some of the most hardworking and underappreciated professionals out there.
I recently read a post that really resonated with me, and it made me think about something I’ve felt for a long time.
Why is it acceptable for every business surrounding the grooming industry to increase its prices, but groomers are often made to feel guilty for doing the same?
Our equipment costs more. Our products cost more.
Insurance, utilities, maintenance, sharpening, continuing education, and everyday operating expenses continue to rise.
And yet, when a groomer raises their prices to reflect those expenses, there’s often an expectation that we should somehow continue providing the same services for less.
But here’s what I wish more people understood. You’re not simply paying someone to give your dog a haircut.
You’re paying for years of experience, education, knowledge, patience, skill, and the ability to safely handle a living, breathing animal with its own personality, fears, needs, and challenges. You’re paying for someone who understands skin and coat health. Someone who recognizes when something doesn’t look or feel right. Someone who knows how to work with a nervous dog, a senior dog, or a dog that requires extra patience and special handling. Someone who spends hours standing, lifting, bending, brushing, bathing, drying, clipping, and sc******ng. And someone who genuinely cares about the animal standing on that table.
❤️ What people don’t always see is what this profession takes from us physically and emotionally.
Our hands, wrists, shoulders, backs, and knees take a beating over the years. We go home exhausted.
We worry about the dogs that struggled through their appointments. We invest our own money and time into learning better techniques, safer handling methods, and new ways to improve the care we provide.
And we do it because we love what we do.
But here’s something I feel very strongly about:
Loving animals should never mean that we have to sacrifice our own financial security, physical health, or well-being to care for them.
Passion doesn’t pay the bills.
Love doesn’t replace worn-out equipment.
And dedication alone doesn’t keep a business running.
Professional grooming is a skilled trade, and it deserves to be recognized and compensated as one.
I also believe the companies that profit from our profession have an opportunity to do more for the people who keep this industry alive.
We need more conversations about groomer burnout, repetitive-use injuries, mental health, financial stability, and career longevity.
We need education that teaches groomers not only how to groom better, but how to build sustainable businesses and protect their futures.
We need an industry that supports the person holding the brush just as much as it promotes the products being sold.
Because the reality is that a groomer who is physically, mentally, and financially exhausted cannot continue giving their best forever.
And that’s something we should all care about.
I understand that grooming is a financial commitment for pet owners. I understand that families have budgets, and I respect that.
But I also understand what it costs to provide professional, safe, compassionate, quality grooming.
And those two realities can exist at the same time.
Not every grooming service will fit every budget, and that’s okay.
What shouldn’t happen is groomers feeling pressured to undervalue themselves simply because they’re afraid someone will question their prices.
We should never have to apologize for charging what it takes to operate a responsible, sustainable business.
I believe in continuing education, quality products, individualized care, and putting the dog’s comfort and well-being first.
Those things require time, investment, and experience.
And I will never apologize for wanting to provide the very best care possible while also building a business that allows me to continue doing what I love.
TO MY FELLOW GROOMERS:
Know your worth.
Protect your body.
Continue your education.
Charge appropriately for your time and skill.
Support one another instead of competing over who can offer the cheapest groom.
And please remember that taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of the animals entrusted to you.
❤️ TO EVERY PET OWNER READING THIS:
I want to ask you to think about something.
When you bring your dog to a professional groomer, you’re trusting that person with a member of your family.
You’re trusting their judgment, their experience, their patience, and their ability to keep your pet safe and comfortable.
That trust is something we take seriously.
But if you truly value the person caring for your dog, I encourage you to look beyond the price of the appointment.
Support the professionals who care for your pets.
Respect their time and their scheduling policies.
Keep your dog on a regular grooming schedule. It helps maintain their skin and coat health and makes the grooming process more comfortable.
Be honest about your dog’s health, behavior, and any challenges they may have.
Understand that a severely matted coat, a difficult temperament, or a dog requiring specialized care involves additional time, physical effort, and responsibility.
Recognize that when grooming prices increase, it isn’t necessarily because someone is trying to make more money. Often, it’s because the cost of providing the same level of quality care has increased.
And when you find a groomer who treats your dog with kindness, patience, and genuine compassion, please don’t make price the only measure of their value.
Recommend them.
Leave a positive review.
Respect their boundaries.
Appreciate their expertise.
And understand that their ability to continue caring for your pet depends on their ability to maintain a healthy, sustainable business.
Because here’s the reality: If we continue expecting skilled groomers to work harder, charge less, and sacrifice their health to keep everyone else happy, eventually there won’t be enough experienced groomers left to provide the quality care our pets deserve.
This isn’t about asking pet owners to pay more without question.
It’s about helping people understand what goes into professional grooming and why fair pricing matters.
It’s about recognizing that quality, safety, experience, and compassion have value.
And it’s about understanding that a groomer who is respected, supported, and able to make a sustainable living is better positioned to provide consistent, high-quality care throughout their career.
TO THE CLIENTS WHO ALREADY UNDERSTAND THIS:
THANK YOU. ❤️
Thank you for trusting us.
Thank you for respecting our time.
Thank you for understanding that our prices reflect much more than a haircut.
Thank you for recognizing that behind every beautifully groomed dog is a professional who has invested years into learning their craft.
Your support means more than you may ever realize.
AND TO THE GROOMING INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE:
Let’s start investing as much energy into supporting the people doing the work as we do into selling them the tools to do it.
We need more education, resources, injury prevention, mental health support, and realistic conversations about what it takes to build a long, healthy career in this profession.
Because without healthy, educated, supported, and financially sustainable groomers, there is no grooming industry.
🐾 MY FINAL MESSAGE TO PET OWNERS IS THIS:
The next time you look at the cost of grooming your dog, I hope you’ll consider everything that price represents.
The years of experience. The education. The equipment. The physical demands. The responsibility.
The patience. The compassion. And the person who shows up every day to care for animals that cannot speak for themselves.
If you want experienced, compassionate, professional groomers to be there for your pets tomorrow, we have to value and support them today.
Because professional grooming isn’t a luxury for many dogs. It’s an important part of their health, hygiene, comfort, and overall well-being.
And the people providing that care deserve to earn a living without sacrificing their own health and future.
We don’t just groom dogs. We dedicate our careers, our bodies, our hearts, and often our entire lives to their care.
PLEASE VALUE THE HANDS THAT CARE FOR THE PETS YOU LOVE. 🐾❤️
