Community keeps the ranch running.

About 13 months ago I was injured quite badly as a result of an incident at the ranch. My right knee took the majority of the abuse, leaving me with a torn ACL, torn MCL, and a torn meniscus. I spent most of the summer unable to ride and limited on what I could do physically.
After the injury it was a long time before I was ready to get back on a horse, when I did I chose Jack. He is a special horse to me and is my “steady Eddie”. Since that first ride I have continued riding, albeit at a much slower pace. Tomorrow I go in for Surgery to reconstruct my right knee so yesterday I once again saddled up Jack and put in some miles as I won’t be doing any riding for awhile post surgery.
I have other horses and they all mean a lot to me, but Jack definitely holds a special place in my heart. If you have ever had horses I hope you will be lucky enough to have that once in a lifetime horse that means something extra to you like Jack has been to me.

And last but not least thank you to Mrs Sky Hound for supporting what most people would call crazy, starting a cattle ranch in my 50s, this is not a normal retirement but I Love you so much your encouragement.

What a difference 48 hours can make.

It all started with a call at 9:30pm from Charles Flexington to come out and check on a week old calf. The calf was not moving, that started a very long 36 hours trying to keep her alive and treating the mom for mastitis. With the help of neighbors Justine and Kelsey O-Burnrn (I even had Mrs Sky Hound in supporting the calf while I tried to feed her milk) we did everything we could to save the calf but sometimes even that is not enough and unfortunately the calf died.

Then everything changed. A few hours later we went to move the mom out of her pen and back out with the herd, while moving her I noticed a brand new calf, already standing and nursing on his mom (we didn’t even notice she had gone into labor). Next I received an email from a local business that they were sponsoring the ranches veterans and first responders gathering and ranch branding, with a $2000.00 check and participating on the day (I’ll recognize the business in another post). Shortly after I received news that a good friend was successful in purchasing a house and would be moving from the city to a small farm not far from the ranch.

To finish out 48 hours of highs and lows, Saba and I rode into Cherhill for a drink at the Pub and were met by friends and neighbors ending the day with a sunset ride back to the ranch.

I can’t wait to see what today brings.
