🇮🇪 Kicking off my trade export mission to Ireland!

What better way to start than by attending what seems to be the event of the year for Ireland’s dog-loving community, Pet Expo Ireland! 🐾

Beyond meeting a ridiculous number of adorable (and remarkably well-behaved!) dogs, it was fascinating to connect with so many pet businesses that are essentially living parallel lives to those of us operating in Canada’s pet industry. Different country, different market, but so many familiar experiences, challenges, and opportunities.

I’m already learning so much about Ireland’s dog culture, attitudes toward canine welfare, and the people and organizations helping shape the industry here.

One of the unexpected highlights was getting to meet several influential people in Ireland’s dog world whom I actually have meetings scheduled with later this week! It was wonderful to make those introductions in such a relaxed, real-life setting before sitting down for more formal conversations.

And judging by the number of familiar names and faces everyone seemed to know, I got the impression that anyone who’s anyone in Ireland’s dog world was there!

I’m looking forward to a week of conversations, new perspectives, and exploring opportunities for collaboration across the Atlantic.

Only just getting started, and already so much to take away! 🇨🇦🤝🇮🇪

These years go by so fast… as we transition into Fall season I think about how many summers, falls, etc that we actually have with our dogs.

I haven’t yet shared about what this experience meant to me, to reconnect and heal old wounds from the traumatic loss of my heart dog, Blue. But my bestie Stephanie has put some healing words together as we both were fortunate enough to be touched by the weirdly amazing little community that is the Grief Project by Chanelle Jefferson. I will post my own reflection and story soon but Steph’s is too good not to share - and I am proud to be a “closest thing to a sister” to my other sister.

Today is Puppy Mill Awareness Day

While today brings attention to the realities of puppy mills and irresponsible breeding, here on PEI, we also need to talk about something much bigger: the lack of legislation regulating companion animal breeding on our island.

Currently, PEI does not have legislation specifically regulating companion animal breeding to ensure animals are being bred, housed, and cared for under appropriate standards.

That’s why we are asking for legislation to regulate companion animal breeding on PEI. Our petition calls for breeder licensing and registration, care standards, inspections, proper record keeping and traceability, and meaningful enforcement.
