Did you know that, February is National Pet Dental Health Month, a time to focus on preventing dental disease, which affects most pets by age of 3, leading to pain, bad breath, and serious issues affecting the heart, kidneys, and liver.

How you as a pet owner can help by including daily brushing with pet toothpaste, dental diets, chew toys, water additives, and regular veterinary dental checkups, including professional cleanings at the vets that gets under the gum line, to keep your pet's smile healthy and prevent systemic problems.

So why it matters,
Prevalence: Up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have dental disease by age of 3.
Pain: Dental issues make eating and playing painful.
Systemic Risk: Bacteria from the mouth can spread, causing damage to the heart, liver, kidneys, and even leading to respiratory issues.
Signs of dental problems
- Bad breath
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Yellow/brown tartar buildup
- Difficulty eating or drooling
- Loose or missing teeth

Pet dental health is year-round, but February serves as a vital reminder for owners!

Here is a picture of Gizmo after his dental, his oral health was neglected for sometime. He had most of his teeth removed, he also had a bad infection in his mouth that left him with a broken bottom jaw.

⚠️Coyote Awareness for Pet Owners

🚨Coyote mating season is here🚨
This time of year (typically January through March), coyotes become more territorial, protective, and bold, which significantly increases the risk of encounters with pets. Pups are born in the spring, and adult coyotes actively defend their territory during this period.

We recently treated a dog that was attacked by a pack of coyotes. This was not a small dog — she weighed 60 lbs and sustained multiple lacerations that required suturing. This is an important reminder that it’s not just small cats or tiny dogs at risk — medium and large dogs can also be targeted.

Living in Northern Ontario, surrounded by forest and natural wildlife corridors, means these encounters can happen close to home.

⚠️ Important safety reminders:

🐕 Larger dogs are not immune to coyote attacks

🚧 Fences are not a guarantee of safety — coyotes can easily scale most fences

👀 Always supervise pets outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk

🦮 Keep dogs on leash and avoid leaving pets unattended, even in fenced yards

Unfortunately, we see the injuries that can result from these encounters, and they can be severe and traumatic. Awareness and prevention are key to keeping your pets safe.
