The warmer weather is here and while we don't want to complain after the winter we all endured, hot weather can be tough on horses just as much as the cold 🔥🐴

Here are some signs of heat stress to look for in your horse:
💧 Excessive sweating or lack of sweating
🫁 Rapid breathing
♥️ Elevated heart rate
💤 Lethargy
❌ Reluctance to move

If you notice these signs, move your horse to shade or a cooler indoor area (such as a stall with a fan), provide cool water, and contact your veterinarian if symptoms persist.

Did you know that approximately 60%-90% of horses, especially performance horses, suffer from a condition known as Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome? 🤔🐴

Symptoms can include:
➡️ Poor appetite
➡️ Weight loss
➡️ Performance issues
➡️ Recurrent colic episodes
➡️ Behavioural changes (such as girthiness, irritability and nervousness)

Foals can also suffer from gastric ulcers! 🍼

You may have noticed a new face on the road with our team 🩺

Tess is a 4th year student from the Ontario Veterinary Collage. Before vet school she completed a degree in animal biology at the University of Guelph. Hoping to pursue a career in equine medicine, she especially loves lameness and neonatal medicine. Outside of school, she enjoys horseback riding, playing the guitar and spending time with family and friends.
