When a ā€œbiteā€ isn’t just a bite 🐓

This horse presented with a swelling on his neck that had continued to drain pus. Initially, we suspected a bite or small abscess, but when it just wouldn’t heal, we knew we had to dig a little deeper… no pun intended! šŸ˜‰

Ultrasound revealed two areas of foreign material creating significant acoustic shadowing. Surgical exploration confirmed what we suspected: two sticks were hiding deep within the tissue! 🌿

The foreign bodies were removed, the area was cleaned up, and this horse is now well on his way to a full recovery. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Horses truly are incredible animals, and sometimes, they manage to get themselves into the most unexpected situations!

We asked for your questions, and today Dr. Barnes is answering a great one from Wendy:

ā€œWhat can I do to treat mud fever before calling the vet?ā€

She shares a few practical steps you can take at home. Have another question for our team? Put it in the comments below.

Get to know Dr. Amy Bennett 🐓✨

Q: When did you know you wanted to become a veterinarian?
A: I spent a lot of my childhood in hospitals with my mom, who was terminally ill, and I’d often pretend I was a doctor. I knew early on I wanted to work in medicine. At the same time, I fell completely in love with horses — and watching my own vet, Dr. Chris Gaul, I remember thinking almost immediately, This is what I want to do. From that point on, becoming an equine vet became my dream, and I built my whole life around making it happen.

Q: Favourite part of being an equine vet?
A: Working with clients and their horses to solve a problem and get them back to what they love. There’s nothing better than seeing a rider smile when their horse is finally feeling better. The icing on the cake is the photos afterwards — horse shows, trail rides, or just another adventure together.

Q: Least favourite part?
A: The cases where, despite everyone’s best efforts, we simply can’t save a horse. Even with caring owners and every possible resource, some conditions are beyond our ability to treat. Those are the ones that stay with you.

Q: One snack you can’t live without on the road?
A: Timbits. No explanation needed.

Q: First day off after an on‑call weekend?
A: When Monday at 8am hits after being on call since Friday at 4pm, I’m the happiest person alive — freedom. I usually end up working anyway, but at least I can take a shower without worrying about being pulled away halfway through. Mostly, that first day off is about catching up, getting organized, and enjoying the little things.
