140 years ago, in 1886, heavy horses first stepped into the spotlight in Calgary — marking the beginning of a tradition that still thrives today.

This July 3–6, as we celebrate the 140th anniversary of heavy horses showing in Calgary, The Draft Horse Journal is proud to feature a special article written by Bruce Roy, published in 2012, tracing the origins of this iconic event and its evolution into the beloved show now held at the Calgary Stampede.

Bruce Roy is the Calgary Stampede’s longest‑serving volunteer, and the Heavy Horse Show would not be what it is today without his decades of dedication.

From those early days in 1886 to the vibrant international showcase it has become, the Heavy Horse Show has remained a cornerstone of Calgary’s agricultural heritage. We are proud to share that the Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Show is the longest‑running heavy horse show in North America — a legacy built by generations of exhibitors, volunteers, and horsemen.

As we look ahead to Stampede 2026, we’re inviting exhibitors from across the continent to bring their horses, their passion, and their legacy to the Calgary Stampede. Whether you’ve competed here for generations or are considering making this your first Calgary appearance, there’s never been a better year to join us.
