When your own dog becomes the patient!

Our techs spend their days caring for everyone else’s pets, but sometimes it’s their own furry family members who need a little extra attention. Shelley brought in her Alley for a heart ultrasound and ECG.

In Alberta, Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) can perform nearly all aspects of veterinary medicine, with three key exceptions:

-diagnosing medical conditions
-determining treatment plans (including prescribing medications)
-performing surgery.

Beyond these limitations, vet techs can perform comprehensive physical examinations, develop individualized anesthetic protocols for veterinarian approval, administer and monitor anesthesia, and provide advanced emergency and critical care.

RVTs are highly trained medical professionals whose expertise plays an essential role in veterinary medicine!

Following their education, RVTs must pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and meet provincial registration requirements.

Their dedication to learning doesn’t stop at graduation! RVTs complete ongoing continuing education to maintain their registration and stay current with advancements in veterinary medicine.
