🍂 Fall Laminitis: What Horse Owners Should Know

Fall can bring an increased risk of laminitis, especially for horses that are sensitive to sugars or prone to weight gain.

🌱 Changing grass: As temperatures drop and days get shorter, stressed pasture grass can develop higher sugar levels.

🐴 Less exercise: With less riding and activity, horses may gain weight, increasing their risk.

🍁 Seasonal hormone changes: Hormone levels naturally change in the fall. Horses with PPID (Cushing’s disease) may be at higher risk for laminitis during this time.

🩺 If your horse has risk factors for laminitis, consider limiting their time on pasture and talk with your veterinarian about ways to reduce their risk.

A little prevention can go a long way this fall! 🍂🐎

As summer comes to an end, we’re saying goodbye to our summer students, Holly and Sara, as they head back to school! 📚

We’ve been lucky to have both of them join us at the clinic this summer, gaining hands-on experience and getting a behind-the-scenes look at life in equine veterinary medicine. They’ve been a wonderful addition to our team and have helped keep things running smoothly during a busy summer season.

We’re so grateful for all their hard work and are excited to see where their education takes them next! 💙

Wishing Holly and Sara a great school year — and we hope to see them back at TD Equine in the future! 🐴✨

🦷 Why Does My Horse Need Their Teeth Floated? 🐴

Did you know a horse’s teeth grow and wear unevenly throughout their life? Over time, sharp points and hooks can develop, making it uncomfortable or even painful to eat or wear a bit.

Signs your horse may need a dental exam include:
• Dropping hay or grain while eating
• Weight loss or difficulty maintaining condition
• Head tossing or resistance under saddle
• Difficulty turning or accepting the bit
• Bad breath or swelling around the jaw
• Quidding (dropping partially chewed hay)

Routine dental floating helps smooth sharp edges, improves comfort, and allows your horse to chew efficiently in return supporting better digestion, performance, and overall health.

Most horses benefit from a dental examination every 6–12 months, though young horses, seniors, and horses with dental abnormalities may need more frequent care.

If it’s been a while since your horse’s last dental, now is a great time to book an appointment! Your horse will thank you. 🐎✨
